Roktagg the Immovable, the Fixed Lord

Roktagg was the most stubborn of the First Ones, sitting in his throne of stone and ore deep under the surface of Brumia. He relished in the unchanging qualities of his environment, not like the water or air, which could never be relied on. He never traveled out into the open land except in times of extreme need, and chose to remain underground where he could feel connected to all the goings-on in his own secret world under the surface.

The Creation of the Dwarves

Roktagg's realm was that of all subterra, vast expanses of caves, minerals, dirt and stone. He was enthralled by the veins of ore and minerals running through Brumia, and would spend days moving through the ground following a vein to its source. Although he abhorred the mutability of surface life, there was something Roktagg appreciated about the process of taking ore and refining it into something more than what it had been, while still retaining its uninhibited and natural essence. Soon his throne was covered in gold and crusted in jewels, and he had begun the work of transforming his stone abode into that of a glittering palace. No matter how much the other First Ones mocked his efforts, Roktagg ignored them, and never faltered from his vision.   However, Roktagg soon realized that despite his eternal stamina and enormous strength, the vision he had for his underground utopia would take far too long. And Roktagg was not a patient being. So he sat on his gilded throne and thought for a long time about how he might accomplish his work. Finally, he arrived at a solution.   Roktagg would make an extremely rare visit to the surface, and ask Ylla, the Maiden Mother, for her assistance. Roktagg had seen how she crafted those creatures from the clay, perhaps she might create something for him as well.   He traveled through the ground, making his way to where he sensed Ylla to be. Roktagg emerged in a spray of dirt, sending chunks of rock and soil everywhere. He ordered the Maiden Mother to stop whatever unimportant work she was doing at the moment, and to make a second version of him, so that he may do twice the work. Ylla thought, and replied that it would be impossible to replicate his incredible power using just her natural materials. However, she said, picking up a piece of stone that Roktagg had flung during his arrival, perhaps she could make something in his image, less powerful, but just as hearty.   She plucked a hair from Roktagg's dirty beard, cupped her hands together around the hair and the chunk of rock, and breathed life into it. When she opened her hands, a miniature Roktagg stood before them, skin as tough as the stone from which it was born.   Roktagg laughed, a great booming laugh, and said that he would require a hundred more of these delightful little stone men. Ylla frowned, and asked why. Roktagg gave his intent, to use these creatures to dig and mine and create his underground palace. Ylla shook her head, refusing to birth any more of her children to be used as slave labor. Roktagg grew furious, and told Ylla that she would make these stone men for him, if she wanted to or not. He grabbed her and sunk back down underground, where he held the Maiden Mother captive. Roktagg forced Ylla to make hundreds, thousands of these little stone men to dig out the ores and gems he required to build his palace.   Eventually, Roktagg freed Ylla from her prison underground, once she had made enough stonemen for his goals to be reached. The stonemen however remained down beneath the surface with Roktagg, slaves to his every whim. They eventually developed their own language as a way to communicate with each other without Roktagg's knowledge, and they came up with a name for themselves as well. They called themselves Dwarves, which in their tongue meant "Born from Stone". Over the thousands of years, many Dwarves would escape from Roktagg's grasp, and live amongst the blossoming civilizations above the ground.   However, it was not until the Ousting, when Ylla and the rest of the Prime Nine would defeat Roktagg, that they would free the rest of the Dwarves he held captive, once and for all.
