Horquath the Twisted, the Aberrant Artificer

(a.k.a. The Aberrant Artificer)

Among First Ones, there were few that could match the intelligence and ingenuity of Horquath. Initially, she wandered the Brumian expanses, adrift within her own head, lost in the unspent potential of her great mind. She would see the empty world before her, and knew something was missing. Still, her mind worked too fast to properly focus on what was absent, and she grew frustrated and angry, bitter and lonely.   One day, as she wandered, Horquath caught sight of her sister, Ylla, The Maiden Mother, on her knees in some mud along a riverbank. Ylla was carefully molding something, then reaching her cupped hands up to her lips and breathing into them. Horquath watched as Ylla opened her hands, revealing a shape. The shape had a head, a torso, arms and legs, and was standing tall and proud. Ylla had created Man. She placed him down beside another similar figure, more shapely, standing equally as proud, but with a quiet strength. This was Woman, the Mother's first Child.   It was in this moment that Horquath realized her true potential, the roiling storm of her thoughts finally focused, and she could see where her path lay. She saw the creations of Ylla and decided to birth children of her own.   Horquath attempted her first creation, but her mind worked faster than her hands could keep up. She created monsters, hideous beings. These things were not as what Ylla had made. With each attempt, her creations grew ever more crooked. Horquath saw the beautiful beings Ylla had given birth to, and became enraged. New monsters came from her jealousy, each more gnarled than the last. Yet, as Horquath spawned creature after creature, she slowly fell in love with her own crooked children. Her genius had manifested itself, and with each new beast birthed by her hand, Horquath's mind became ever more Twisted, cursing her Sons and Daughters. She had become the Aberrant Artificer.   Horquath's Sons and Daughters soon wreaked their havoc upon Brumia, preying on Ylla's weaker creations. Thus, Ylla bestowed great wisdom and intelligence on her Children, in order to protect them from Horquath's monsters. In response, Horquath created stranger, more vile things. With every iteration of monster, Ylla would create something equally as brilliant and natural.   Despite their creative endeavors, Horquath and Ylla could not have been more dissimilar. Ylla always sought to create the light within all those she breathed life into, whereas Horquath found beauty within the dark, the comfortless aspects of nature. Horquath and Ylla worked in opposition, each injecting their own affinities within those they molded from the elements, spawning entities with light and darkness. As sisters, she and Ylla, worked together to create many creatures to walk, swim, and fly throughout this new land of Brumia.
