In the Broken Land, mages were feared for their power beyond imagination. They ruled the scarred land, guiding the shattered people and regrowing the land after the Great Tide. Protected by their magic and the natural fortress that was the Land of Mages, they had nothing to fear even after the kingdom they saved turned against them.
That is, until the magic ran dry. When the land lost its protection, the high plateau was invaded and most scholars savagely slaughtered. For ten days and ten nights, the last of the world's wonders burnt to ashes.
The few surviving mages now live in hiding, posing as mere doctors, librarians or exiled from the world in the last nodes of power that still remains, far weaker than what they used to be. Children that present an appeal to magic are drowned in their cradle, and the inquisition is set to get rid of all survivors. For the era of magic is ending.
