Bertha of Tours

Cwen Bertha Merohingi

Bertha, a daughter of the noble Frankish lineage, was born in 565 AD to Charibert I and Ingoberga. Her lineage was steeped in the grandeur of the Merovingian dynasty, with her grandfather being the mighty King Chlothar I and her great-grandparents the revered Clovis I and Clotilde.

Raised in the enlightened embrace of Tours, her education was a bastion of Christian doctrine and scholarly pursuits. Her marriage to Æthelberht of Cantware in 580 AD was a strategic alliance that granted her the freedom to worship her faith openly. This condition of her marriage bore profound implications, as Bertha brought with her the seeds of Christianity to English soil.

Her influence grew with the arrival of St. Augustine in 597, sent by Pope Gregory I on a divine mission to restore the Christian faith to the isles. The pope had called upon Bertha to soften her husband's pagan heart, and indeed, her quiet yet steadfast conviction played a pivotal role in Æthelberht's eventual conversion.

This historic moment was celebrated with the establishment of the Abbey of St Peter and Paul, founded upon the very ground granted by Æthelberht under Bertha's guidance. The pope recognized her role in this monumental shift, addressing her directly in 601 with high praise for her unwavering belief and her erudition.
