Alchemical Recipes

A player must have procifiency with alchemist's supplies in order to learn these recipes and produce these powerful concoctions, elixirs, oils, and potions. If a concoction requires a saving throw, the DC is equal to 8 + your proficiency bonus + your intelligence ability modifier, unless otherwise specified. If you have expertise in alchemist's supplies, the saving throw DC is instead equal to 10 + your proficiency bonus + your intelligence ability modifier. Alchemist's supplies include four glass beakers, a metal frame to hold a beaker in place over an open flame, a glass stirring rod, a small mortar and pestle, a silver knife, and a pouch of common alchemical ingredients such as salts, distilled alcohol, powdered iron, and purified water.  

Common Recipes

These recipes are generally commonplace, with at least several individuals in a city knowing a few of these. The learning of one of these recipes requires 1 day of work and a cost of 50 gold. The creation of these recipes requires 1 day of work and a cost of 25 gold after the ingredients have been gathered.  

Acid

A flask filled with an electric green liquid that bubbles and fizzes when it comes into contact with organic compounds. As an action, you can throw the flask up to 20 feet, where it shatters on impact. Make a ranged Attack roll against a creature or an object, and you have proficiency with this attack. On a hit, the target takes 2d6 acid damage.

    Alchemist Fire

    A phial filled with a sticky, adhesive fuid which ignites when exposed to air. As an action, you can throw the phial up to 20 feet, where it shaters on impact. Make a ranged Attack roll against a creature or an object, and you have proficiency with this attack. On a hit, the target is set aflame and takes 1d4 fire damage at the start of each of its turns. That creature or another within 5 feet of it can use their action to end the damage by patting the flames out.

  •  

    Assassin's Arrogance

    This phial of inky black liquid makes no sound, even if you shake it vigorously. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you you can add a d4 to any Dexterity (Stealth) check and Dexterity (Sleight of Hand) check you make for 1 hour.
  • Ingredients: river snails, silent princess petals, squid ink
  •  

    Bottled Breath

    This filter is filled with a bluish smoke. You can inhale the contents of this filter as an action. When you inhale it, you choose to either exhale it immediately or hold it. If you exhale the breath, you gain the effts of the gust of wind spell. If you hold the breath, you do not need to breathe for 1 hour, though you can end this benefit early; ending this breath early does not give you the benefit of exhaling the breath.

    Ember Earth

    This volatile powder is held in a small pouch. When ignited by a flame or by a fuse, the powder explodes. Each creature within 5 feet of the exploding pouch must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failure, they take 2d6 fire damage, or half as much on a success. You can bind multiple pouches of blasting powder together so they explode at the same time. Each additional pouch increases the damage by 1d6 (up to a maximum of 6d6), the blast radius increases by 5 feet (maximum of 25 feet).

    Fake Blood

    Crafted to look, smell, and even taste like blood, this phial is filled with a dark, reddish liquid that dries a dark brown. Only an identify spell can determine that this mixture is not entirely blood. A creature can drink this as an action during a short rest to recover one hit die. This concoction can also be used as a material component for spells that require blood to be cast.
  • Ingredients: a drop of your blood, bloodroot, finely powdered iron
  •  

    Fog Dust

    This pouch contains a silky, ashey powder. As an action, you can hurl the contents of this pouch, covering a 10-foot radius diameter centered on your current location with a grey smoke. The area within the smoke is heavily obscured, and it lasts for 1 minute. Not even a heavy wind can disperse it.

    Infusion of Insect

    A bottle of dark green liquid that buzzes slightly when you listen closely. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, insects that are size Small or smaller wont voluntarilly come within 5 feet of you. If you move into a space with insects, they will either leave the area as fast they can, or stop moving until you pass. Magical insects, such as those transformed by the giant insect spell or those created by the insect plague spell are immunte to this potion, as well as insects that are size Medium or larger.

    Ink (common)

    5 ounces of ink, which can be used for writing, as well as for crafting scrolls or recording spells in a spellbook. This ink is suffuciant for creating a spell scroll of levels 0-1. A creature can use this ink to copy an appropriately level spell into a spell book or to make an appropriately leveled spell scroll in half the normal time, without costing any extra gold.

    Potion of Alacrity

    A thick, soupy liquid that has a dark purple sheen. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain a +5 bonus to initiative rolls for 10 minutes. You also cannot be surprised for the duration. When the effects end, a creature who injested this potion must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or gain one level of exhaustion.

  •  

    Potion of Climbing

    A potion of muddied brown, with what looks like bits of shale or grit inside. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain a climbining speed equal to your base walking speed for 1 hour. During this time, you also have advantage on Strength (Athletic) ability checks you make to climb or jump.
  • Ingredients: giant wolf spider hair, skulk claw, powdered slate
  •  

    Potion of Swimming

    A potion separated into layers of teal, light blue, and indigo, resembling the deep ocean; shaking the phial mixes the colors for a moment, but then they separate into different layers again. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain a swimming speed for 1 hour. During this time, you also have advantage on Strength (Athletic) checks you make to swim.

  •  

    Soothsalts

    Also called the Procrastinator's Powder or the Student's Savior, this is a pouch of powder, derived from naturally ocurring crystalines. The color varies depending on the color of geode used. This recipe makes enough for 2 doses. Soothsalts are consumed by snorting them through the nose, and frequent users can be identified by the telltale signs of crimson stains around their nostrils and mouth. A creature subjected to a dose of soothsalts gains advantage on all Intelligence ability checks for 1d4 hours. For each dose of soothsalts a creature consumes, they must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or gain one level of exhaustion, which is cumulative with multiple doses. Soothsalts may be worth as much as 150gp to the right buyer, but it is often illegal to trade.

  •  

    Tinker's Tincture

    A flask of metalic-tasting liquid that leaves the drinker coughing for a few seconds. This recipe makes enough for 3 doses. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain advantage on all ability checks you make that uses an artisan tool, disguise kit, forgery kit, herbalism kit, poisoner's kit, or thieve's tools for 8 hours.

  •  

    Uncommon Recipes

    These recipes are a little rarer, though there is still usually one, maybe two individuals in a large city capable of making some of these items. The learning of one of these recipes requires 5 days of work and a cost of 200 gold. The creation of these recipes requires 3 days of work and a cost of 100 gold after the ingredients have been gathered.  

    Dose of Detection

    A phial of dark blue ichor that occasionally flashes with a white light. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain the effects of the detect magic spell for 1 hour.

    Ink (uncommon)

    3 ounces of ink, which can be used for writing, as well as for crafting scrolls or recording spells in a spellbook. This ink is suffuciant for creating a spell scroll of levels 2-3. A creature can use this ink to copy an appropriately level spell into a spell book or to make an appropriately leveled spell scroll in half the normal time, without costing any extra gold.

    Invisible Ink

    1 ounce of a violet-colored ink, which when dried becomes invisible to the naked eye. This ink can only be seen through the use of an item, spell, or other trait that can see invisible things, or if a mild acidic (such as lemon juice) is applied to the surface.

    Lesser Mana Potion

    Reminiscent of the night sky, this potion is of a dark blue or a deep purple, with a few tiny flecks of silver like stars. When agitated, it glows with a feint violet light. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you recover a number of combined spell slots equal to 2 (either one 2nd-level spell slot or two 1st-level spell slots). Alternatively, you regain up to 4 expended sorcery points.

  •  

    Midnight Oil

    A deep reddish oil that, when used to light a lanturn, emits bright light for 5 feet and dim light for an additional 5 feet for 8 hours. If a creature stays in the light emitted by this oil for the full duration, they gain all the benefits of a long rest without needing to sleep, provided they only engage in light activity, such as reading, studying, talking, etc.
  • Ingredients: a cruise of oil, gilded myrrh, scarlet rowan sap
  •  

    Oil of Slipperiness

    One vial of this oil can cover a Medium or smaller creature along with the equipment it is wearing and carrying. An additional vial is needed for each size category above Medium). Applying this tan-colored oil takes about 10 minutes, and the affected creature gains the effects of the freedom of movement spell for 8 hours. Alternatively, the oil can cover a 5-foot radius circle on a flat surface, duplicating the effects of the grease spell in that area for 8 hours.

    Potion of Animal Friendship

    A potion filled with a brownish yellow liquid that sloshes even when it's not being shaken. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you can cast the animal friendship spell at will for 1 hour.

    Potion of Dragon Breath

    A potion filled with a thin liquid of the same color as the unique type of ingredient you use. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you can use a bonus action to exhale destructive energy at a target within 10 feet of you. The target must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 6d6 damage on a failure, or half as much damage on a success. The damage depends on the type of scales you use. The effects end after you exhale the breath five times, or when 1 hour has passed.

    Potion of Growth

    This potion has the consistency of a thick, green syrup that seems to constantly contract and expand. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain the 'enlarge' effects of the enlarge/reduce spell for 1d4 hours (no concentration required).
  • Ingredients: giant wolf spider hair, morning mist leaves, sourgrass
  •  

    Potion of Resistance

    You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain resistance to one damage type for the next hour. The resistance depends on the special ingredient added. When making this potion, you can add more damage types by adding an ingredient for another damage type and increasing the time required for this potion by 2 days for each new ingredient.

    Potion of Waterbreathing

    A bottle of incredibly foamy liquid, this sea-green concoction smells feintly of the sea. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you can breath underwater for 8 hours.
  • Ingredients: gillyweed, kelp leaves, theki root
  •  

    Rare Recipes

    These recipes are are tightly controlled, and only one person of prominence, either a court wizard, the leader of a guild, or some other individual of great standing in a large city may have knowledge of these recipes. The learning of one of these recipes requires 15 days of work and a cost of 800 gold. The creation of these recipes requires 7 days of work and a cost of 400 gold after the ingredients have been gathered.  

    Communion's Chorus

    A flask of what looks like water, but has a bitter aftertaste that stays on the tongue for hours. A single dose contains enough for four creatures to partake from it. A creature can drink from the flask as an action. If more than one creature drinks from the same batch within one minute, they forge a telepathic link between them, which lasts for 1 hour. Each creature with one of these telepathic links can communicate telepathically with any other creature with a telepathic link while they are within 1 mile of each. They can do so even if they do not share a common language.

    Brew of Babel

    This silvery blue concoction causes a slight whistling when shaken or stirred. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain the ability to speak, read, and write as well as understand any language you hear for 8 hours.

    Diminishing Draught

    This crimson liquid shivers on its own, even if it is perfectly motionless. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain the 'reduce' effects of the enlarge/reduce spell for 1d4 hours (no concentration required).
  • Ingredients: canis root, hair from a dwarf's beard, juniper berries
  •  

    Ink (rare)

    1 ounce of ink, which can be used for writing, as well as for crafting scrolls or recording spells in a spellbook. This ink is suffuciant for creating a spell scroll of levels 4-5. A creature can use this ink to copy an appropriately level spell into a spell book or to make an appropriately leveled spell scroll in half the normal time, without costing any extra gold.
  • Ingredients: charcoal, finely powdered iron, willowshade fruit
  •  

    Mana Potion

    Reminiscent of the night sky, this potion is of a dark blue or a deep purple, with a moderate amount of tiny flecks of silver like stars. When agitated, it glows with a feint violet light. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you recover a number of combined spell slots equal to 4. Alternatively, you regain up to 6 expended sorcery points.

    Oil of Etherealness

    One vial of this silvery oil can cover a Medium or smaller creature along with the equipment it is wearing and carrying. An additional vial is needed for each size category above Medium). Applying this greyish-blue oil takes about 10 minutes, and the affected creature gains the effects of the etherealness spell for 1 hour.

    Potion of Giant Strength

    This ichor is an ugly grey color, thick and lumpy. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, your strength score changes for the next hour. Your new strength score is determined by the special type of ingredient used.

    Potion of Invulnerability

    The syrupy liquid looks like liquified iron, but it sloshes merily in its phial. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain resistance to all damage except for force or psychic damage for 1 minute.

    Potion of True Dreaming

    This phial contains what looks like liquid silver, which shimmers a metalic blue or purple, or an occasional red. When you drink this potion before falling asleep, your dreams show you true visions of the past, present, or sometimes the future as related to a creature, location, or object of your choosing. the DM determines the nature and duration of these visions. When you awake, you have disadvantage on all wisdom saving throws you make until you finish a short or a long rest.

    Storm's Might

    A churning mass of deep blue liquid, shot through with flashes of white reminiscent of lightning. The container of this potion always shakes or quivers slightly. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, your body becomes charged with the force of a storm, as lightning cracks between your fingertips, your hair stands on end, and the smell of ozone permeates around you. For1 minute, you can use your bonus action to deal 2d10 lightning damage to a creature that is within 10 feet of you.

    Very Rare Recipes

    These recpes are so rare that the exilirs and concoctions they create may be virtually nonexistant. Only a handful of people across a continent may have the knowledge and skill, as well as the means of using these recipes. The learning of one of these recipes requires 30 days of work and a cost of 3,200 gold. The creation of these recipes requires 15 days of work and a cost of 1,600 gold after the ingredients have been gathered.  

    Amortentia

    A phial of bright pink liquid, this is known as the most powerful love potion in the world. You can force an incapacitated humanoid creature to drink this potion as an action, or you can mix it with another drink (this does not alter this potion's effects). A creature that drinks it must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature falls in love with and is charmed by the person whose blood is mixed with the potion for 30 days, or for only 1 day on a success. For the duration, the person whose blood is mixed with the potion can issue commands to the charmed creature, who does their best to obey them. This potion does not have any effect on a non-humanoid creature.

    Greater Mana Potion

    Reminiscent of the night sky, this potion is of a dark blue or a deep purple, with a significant amount of tiny flecks of silver like stars. When agitated, it glows with a feint violet light. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you recover a number of combined spell slots equal to 6. Alternatively, you regain up to 8 expended sorcery points.

    Ink (very rare)

    1 ounce of ink, which can be used for writing, as well as for crafting scrolls or recording spells in a spellbook. This ink is suffuciant for creating a spell scroll of levels 6-7. A creature can use this ink to copy an appropriately level spell into a spell book or to make an appropriately leveled spell scroll in half the normal time, without costing any extra gold.

  •  

    Liquid Luck

    This bright, golden liquid shimmers when near a lightsource. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain a number of d10s equal to your proficiency bonus for the next 8 hours. For the duration, when you make an ability check, attack roll, or a saving throw, you can expend one of these d10s, roll it, and add it to the result, potentially turning a failure into a success. While you have one or more of these d10s, you cannot gain any more from this potion again.

  •  

    Oil of Sharpness

    This clear, gelatinous oil sparkles with tiny, ultrathin silver shards. You can spend 1 minute coating a weapon that deals piercing or slashing damage or up to 20 pieces of ammunion that deal piercing or slashing damage. For 1 hour, the coated item(s) become magical and gain a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls.

  •  

    Potion of Flight

    This potion drifts to the top of its container and has cloudy white impurities drifting in it. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain a flying speed equal to your base walking speed for 8 hours, and you can hover. If you are in the air when the potion wears off, you fall gently to the ground unless you have some other means of staying aloft.

  •  

    Potion of Invisibility

    This potion's container looks empty, but it feels as if it is full of liquid. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you become invisible for 1 hour, and anying you are wearing or carrying is also invisible.
  • Ingredients: fairy stool, pixie's parasol, skulk claw
  •  

    Potion of Supernatural Speed

    This electric-blue potion vibrates in your hand and tingles as you drink it. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain the effects of the haste spell for 1 minute (no concentration required).
  • Ingredients: bloodroot, dragon tongue roots, storm moss
  •  

    Potion of Truesight

    When shaken or stirred, this potion glows with a feint purplish light. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain truesight out to a range of 120 feet for 1 hour.
  • Ingredients: glimmerwart, mandrake root, nothic tear
  •  

    Veritaserum

    This liquid is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. You can force an incapacitated creature to drink this potion as an action, or you can mix it with another drink (this does not alter this potion's effects). A creature that drinks it must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, the creature is compelled to answer any question it is asked honestly and completely for 1 hour. On a success, other creatures have advantage on all charisma ability checks made against it for 10 minutes.

  •  

    Legendary Recipes

    The knowledge of these recipes may have been lost to history, or only remembered in the minds of a few people scattered across the planes or tucked away in an ancient tome. The learning of one of these recipes requires 60 days of work and a cost of 12,800 gold. The creation of these recipes requires 30 days of work and a cost of 6,400 gold after the ingredients have been gathered.  

    Bloodboiling Brew

    A solution that looks like berry juice, but when drunk, it scorches the throat and stings the eyes. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you gain resistance to all damage except for psychic damage for 1 minute, you have advantage on all Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution saving throws, and all weapon attacks you make deal an extra 6 damage of the same type as the weapon. However, for the durration, you cannot cast spells, nor can you concentrate on spells.

  •  

    Ink (legendary)

    1 ounce of ink, which can be used for writing, as well as for crafting scrolls or recording spells in a spellbook. This ink is suffuciant for creating a spell scroll of levels 8-9. A creature can use this ink to copy an appropriately level spell into a spell book or to make an appropriately leveled spell scroll in half the normal time, without costing any extra gold.
  • Ingredients: charcoal, dragon blood, finely ground iron, giant squid ink, willowshade fruit
  •  

    Shadowserum

    A phial of inky black liquid, completely devoid of any light or reflection. As an action, you can throw the phial up to 20 feet, where it shaters on impact. Make a ranged Attack against a creature or an object, and you have proficiency with this attack. When the phial breaks, that area is under the effects of the maddening darkness spell for 10 minutes, centered on the point of impact (no concentration required).

  •  

    Potion of Foresight

    A silvery green concoction that is sometimes a liquid and other times a gas. When you either drink it or inhale it, you gain the effects of the foresight spell for 8 hours.

  •  

    Superior Mana Potion

    Reminiscent of the night sky, this potion is of a dark blue or a deep purple, with an intense amount of tiny flecks of silver like stars that looks like a miniature galaxy. When agitated, it glows with a feint violet light. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you recover a number of combined spell slots equal to 8. Alternatively, you regain up to 12 expended sorcery points.

  •  

    Spring of Wellwishing

    This potion glimmers like liquid diamond. You can drink this potion as an action. When you drink it, you make a wish which comes true, as if you had cast the wish spell.
