Hungry Pyramids
What the fucking fuck?— Sergeant Louis Sanchez
The breach opened onto a mostly-flat plain, reddish-purple in color. The sun was a dull orange ball in an ochre sky. The surface was springy, warm, and gelatinous; it felt as if it was a rubbery sheet stretched over pudding. Scattered everywhere were pyramidal shapes growing from the surface, ranging from a few to several dozen feet high. The air was sickly-sweet, but contained sufficient oxygen to breathe. It was also filled with swarms of insect-like creatures, gnat-sized.
As the swarms approached or passed over a pyramid, it would disgorge a spray of mist. This mist rapidly congealed into hairlike strands, trapping much of the passing swarm, which would then fall onto the pyramid. Upon contact, thousands of cilia erupted, which drew the insects back inside.
Drone flight indicated the landscape continued in this manner for miles in all directions. At the insistence of Science Division, an attempt was made to extract one of the smaller pyramids; this resulted in a spray of goop from under the surface -- it seems it was a "skin" over a liquid pool -- and a horrible, wailing vibration from dozens of nearby pyramid creatures, accompanied by vast clouds of mist.
