Zathruax acquired the Mistheart. His new-found power was more than he could swallow.

Observing Shariel from a distance, Zathruax teleported himself to the elven sorceress the moment she returned from the underground world. The battle between god and mortal began. Shariel's only chance was using the Mistheart.   What she didn't know was that the artifact already contained the essence of Narac, an ancient deity of madness. Being contained for so long didn't exactly improve his mental state. As the magic of the Mistheart was activated, and the dragon god's essence began to be drawn into the artifact, this created an opening for Narac to escape. In a single strike, he killed Shariel, and suddenly held his former prison in his hand.   With Zathruax' essence partially drawn into the Mistheart, the dragon god was vulnerable. But Narac made him an offer: He would release Zathruax' lost essence from the Mistheart, and willingly merge his power with the other deity - but only if the god of madness would stay as an independent sub-personality of Zathruax.   In his hubris, the dragon god was sure he could control Narac, and accepted the deal. This was the moment when Zathruax' power increased excessively, while his mind was driven into madness.
