Eskerios

Surrounded by ocean, salt, and sun, the rigors of island life cut the men and women of Eskerios down to their fighting weight. A land comprised of seven islands, Eskerios is a bustle in trade, transportation, and the spread of information. The influence Eskerios exerts in its region of the world is akin to that of Valdor, but of the eastern hemisphere.

Structure

The government of Eskerios is ruled by The Captain's Council. Five leaders are elected from a general ballot of the captains who want to put forward their candidacy in a series of preliminary votes. After many rounds of election, the list of representatives is condensed down to pool of 5 captains. From this point, they must assign or volunteer for specific positions. The @is elected from amongst themselves who acts the head of the military.
  1. Alcibiades the Traveler – A map maker and adventurer, Alcibiades is known throughout Eskerios and Aizdihar as a man of culture and prodigious knowledge. He has written many volumes over his travels and has a well-known admiration of Goliath ship building.
  2. Tassos the Grand – merchant prince and owner of the Avyssos Trading Company, somewhat lavish, but an exacting and shrewd business man. The rest tolerate him because he’s good at his job. He doubles as the treasurer of the republic.
  3. Iliana Anastasia Pavos – Privateer, exceptionally attractive, has an all-female crew on her flagship, Mistress Fate. Of the Council, she is usually the swing vote, making decisions she believes would benefit her first and then the rest of Eskerios.
  4. Kalamai Nisius – The Harbormaster of the people and a native, Kalamai has deep roots in many organizations of the islands and beyond. Not much is known about his early years in Eskerios, but he rose to prominence during the aftermath of a particularly strong storm where he helped build and rebuild many ships.
  5. Hector Lexius – The current Admiral, son of the last Admiral, got the title by defending the harbor from a Kraken attack. While he has a capable strategic mind, he is prone to outburst when he feels slighted.

Culture

The maritime lifestyle of Eskerios has long bred a love for wanderlust, storytelling, adventure, and so much delicious food. In fact, outside of the mercantile arts, Eskerians are happy to prove their worth at providing great amenities to guests. Bathhouses, gardens, and feasts are all ways a show of wealth can display an individual or a family's prosperity, but even the most humble Eskerian does their best to accommodate what guests they may have at a moment's notice. A fundamentally free people, they may not always agree from island to island, but they do generally recognize each other as part of a larger commercial network of mutually beneficial partnerships assists the other.    Sometimes, however, this so-called "free" society appears somewhat hedonistic to other contemporary powers and cultures of Boros. The Valdorans in particular are happy enough to trade with them for exotic spices and to make use of their swift sea travel. However, they are among those that would likely speak poorly of them once the transaction has ended - generally to gossip about their strange flowing attire and their sexual forwardness. Still, the general disposition of the Eskerians is usually an agreeable one. They sometimes come to blows with members of the Goliatlendir, but that is an old rivalry borne of their desire to show naval superiority from ages long past.

Public Agenda

Most of Eskerian society revolves around travel and subsequently commerce. Things that tend to interrupt commerce are usually frowned upon, hence a large focus on agreements, doplomacy, and security, where needed. Any plan, behavior, or skill that can lead up to a lucrative deal can be seen as a fundamental principal to follow in society at large. As such, some amount of mischief, plotting, and backstabbing is not uncommon, and in some cases, can be seen as a show of cunning and strategy.
