Tiefling

Lore

With no true homeland of their own, Tieflings are found all across Eldetha, living either alone or as members of small communities. They have immersed themselves in the societies in which they live, and while they are widely accepted, there are still those who view their fiendish heritage with a level of distrust. Their appearance varies depending upon their heritage, and it is not unheard of for a Tiefling child's appearance to differ greatly from that of their parents, whether they are Tieflings or not.   To be greeted with stares and whispers, to suffer violence and insult on the street, to see mistrust and fear in every eye: this is the lot of the Tiefling. This mistrust stems from a pact struck generations ago that infused the essence of Asmodeus—overlord of The Nine Hells—into their bloodline. Their appearance and nature are not their fault but the result of an ancient sin, for which they and their descendants will always be held accountable.

Physical Characteristics

  • Height: Similar to humans, usually between 5 and 6 feet tall.
  • Build: Varies depending on heritage; generally lean or muscular.
  • Horns: Large and varied in shape, ranging from ram-like curls to straight gazelle horns or spiraling antelope horns.
  • Tail: Thick and long, typically four to five feet, which lashes or coils around their legs when upset or nervous.
  • Eyes: Solid colors—black, red, white, silver, or gold—with no visible sclera or pupil.
  • Skin: Covers the full range of human coloration, but also includes various shades of red.
  • Hair: Dark, ranging from black or brown to deep red, blue, or purple, cascading down from behind their horns.

Society and Culture

Tieflings typically subsist in small minorities found mostly in human cities or towns, often in the rougher quarters of these places. They may grow up to be swindlers, thieves, or crime lords, although this is more a result of circumstance than nature. Some Tieflings live among other minority populations in enclaves where they are treated with more respect.   Lacking a homeland, Tieflings know they must carve out their own place in the world. They are slow to trust those who claim friendship but are fiercely loyal to those who earn it. A Tiefling who forms bonds of trust becomes a steadfast friend and ally for life.

Key Aspects

  • Distrust: Many face mistrust and prejudice due to their fiendish heritage, stemming from ancient pacts with infernal powers.
  • Adaptability: Tieflings have learned to adapt to various societies, often making their homes in human cities.
  • Strong Bonds: Slow to trust but fiercely loyal once bonds are formed.
  • Fiendish Heritage: Their infernal ancestry grants them unique physical traits and innate magical abilities.

Relations with Other Races

Tieflings often find themselves living on the fringes of society, particularly in human cities, where they may encounter prejudice and suspicion. While they may face disdain due to their fiendish heritage, they are generally accepted by other minority populations. Once their loyalty is earned, Tieflings become invaluable allies, offering steadfast support to those they trust.
