The Rum Dogs Organization in Bones | World Anvil

The Rum Dogs

The Rum Dogs are one of the most feared pirate gangs on the high seas, and also one of the most mysterious. No one knows where their home port is and they seem to hold no loyalty to anyone but themselves. Their ship is the happy disgrace.

Crew

Captain Doorly

For the size of his reputation one would assume Doorly to be size of two men, have arms like tree trunks and to be able to breathe fire from his nostrils. None of these things are true, apart from the fire thing, but that was only once and was due to an unfortunate accident involving choking on his rum and a beach torch, but the less about that incident the better.   He is a man of average height, average looks and average build, the kind of man you would pass without a second glance in the street. There are two things than stand him apart from the average man though, his steel trap of a mind and the fact he can probably shoot you three times before you've even had a chance to draw to your pistol.   While he has been known to pull off some heists that most folk thought were impossible he is not reckless with his crew's lives and rewards them well for their efforts. This, and the fact he always fair and has no favourites earns him the undying loyalty of his crew. Everyone one of them would be willing to die for their Captain, and he would go to any lengths to ensure that didn't happen.

Gnarly one-eye

Funnily enough, Gnarly is actually in possesion of both of his eyes and they both work perfectly fine. No one knows how he came about his name and Gnarly himself has never shared the story with any of his crew mates. In fact he is tight lipped about most of his past life before he joined the Happy Disgrace. His complete loyalty to the ship and her crew is never in doubt however, and as First Mate he has garnered almost as much respect as the Captain over the years.   Gnarly is tall, broad shouldered and has a face that looks as if it was chiselled from rock, which he keeps clean shaven at all times. A fact which astonishes his crew mates, who all know precisely how hard it is to get a clean shave during rough seas, yet never once has Gnarly cut himself. This obvious expertise with a blade makes him a dab hand at knife fights, and he has never lost a game of Five Finger Flick.

Deliliah Dead-eye

The most recent addition to the crew, Delilah has still served with the Happy Disgrace for five years and has become a valued member of the crew. After the death of the old quarter master, everyone agreed that Delilah should take over the job as she seems to have the ability to make friends everywhere she goes. Not only that, but she came from a merchant family and knows how to get the beat deals.   Delilah lives up to her namesake, and while isn't as good with a pistol as the Captain, when it comes to the long shot she is second to none. Whenever the ship makes landfall, she is sure to ensure the crew feasts on fresh meat that night, as she loves to hunt. Delilah is nearly six-foot tall and although quite slender, is toned to a hardness one would expect from five years hard work aboard a ship. She has long blond hair, which she wears in several beaded braids, sea green eyes and a dimple in her chin. She always has a ready smile for folks and always seems to see the best in people.

Just Jeff

Jeff is the ship's cook and chief entertainment, being one of only two people on board who can sing worth a damn, the other being the cabin girl, but she clams up as soon as she thinks anyone is listening. He has been with the ship longer than Captain, having been aboard the ship when it was taken from its original owners by Capatin Doorly. Jeff's only motivation in life is to make people happy with his cooking, as such he wasn't really bothered who was in charge of the ship as long as he was allowed to to do just that. Doorly saw no point in getting rid of Jeff, as he knew how hard it was to get a good ship's cook, so kept him on, much to the crew's relief. Their previous cook had been lousy, and no-one had been that upset when he deserted.   Jeff is rather portly for a sailor, as he saved from having to work much aboard the ship. He instead spends his time preparing and cooking meals and enteratining the crew with song and music, for not only is Jeff an excellent chef, he can also sing and play the guitar, violin and harpsicord. Although he is a happy and jovial sort he does have a face that looks like a bulldog chewing a wasp, so untill he laughs his hearty belly laugh, most people are terrified of him.

Old Hamish Two-eyes

Hamish is another one who's name is slightly misleading. For while he does indeed posses both of his eyes, one of them he keeps in a jar of pickling vinegar in a chest under his bunk. When asked why he keeps it, he says so that he can feed it to the bastard who scooped it out, whenever he finds him. Most people on the crew are a little dubious about this fact as he seems a little too fond of it, but that oddity aside Old Hamish is well liked by the crew. He probably knows more about the sea and sailing than the entire crew combined. He was born at sea and he says he will die at sea.   Hamish is getting on in years and isn't able to do as much about the ship as the other crew members, but he is master at mending nets and rigging, so this is how he spends most of his days on deck when the sailing is good, and below decks drinking rum when it isn't. The Captain probably relies on Hamish the most for advice, and he never plans a mission without running it past the old sea dog first. As smart as the Captain is, sometimes you can't beat a good dose of experience.
