United Kingdom
The early 1990s saw economic upheaval all over the world, later to be revealed to largely be the result of The Gang of Four trying to get control of the USA. After the introduction of the Eurodollar to replace the Pound Sterling, there was fear of megacorporations exploiting natural resouces in the UK. Together, this led to a renewed interst in old traditions and a resurgence in druidic beliefs. In many ways, this group of environmentalists mimicked the trajectory of nomads elsewhere and within a couple of decades they were considered much the same.
At the same time, there was an incresing dissatisfaction with the political system. The new nomads refused to define a specific constituency as that would lock them down, but that also meant they had no representation in parliament. Among those in the cities, anger grew towards an elite percieved as more interested in foreign investors than existing citiezens. The Martial Law Association (MLA) was a special interest group of individuals afraid of what would happen if elections were reformed. In 1999, the MLA managed to oust the monarchy and declare martial law under a state of emergency. They became the de facto rulers of an opressive military dictatorship.
There were still some out there who supported the monarchy. Charles III and prince Andrew were killed in attempt to retake Brittain in the early 2000s. In response, the MLA enacted Project Cromwell — the assassination of any remaining members of the royal family. Princess Beatrice and princess Eugine, the children of Andrew's first marriage, survived on account of living with their mother in Texas.
The way the MLA had divided brittain in order to rule it sparked protests that escalated ito riots on many occasions. Scotland even escalated tensions from attacks starting in 2013 to full-on warfare in 2016. Meanwhile, the Hilliard Corporation and Imperial Metropolitan Agriculture formed an unlikely alliance to restore morarchy. Cartels lent covert supprt as well and made it possible for princess Beatrice to ascend to the throne as Victoria II in 2017. A coalition government of former MLA supporters and monarchists were appointed to restore order.
Regions within the countries in the Union were given more autonomy, with borders being drawn according to ancient kingdoms rather than modern lines. While those borders don't always make sense, they have the benefit of everyone considering them equally unfair. Things were just stabilizing when the Fourth Corporate War happened. The UK had assets in the form of former colonies that were hit but the war itself. And while the rest of the European Economic Community had a stable infrastructure to handle the influx of refugees, the UK was hit hard by unemployment and poverty.
There's, technically, still in martial law of sorts. Victoria II is popular enough that it works. The Democratic Governmnet Committee has yet to officially decide on what the new electoral system is meant to be and as such, all solutions are ad hoc. As a result, local areas often fall back on self-rule. In cities, this has led to gang violence backed by foreign groups like the mafia or yakuza. On the countryside, this means nomad protectorates and ewploitative corporations.
