Once ruled by Duke Oswald and Meredith Iyorith, assisted by his court wizard Diederik Haesler, but their surrender during the thronewar left their fate in the hands of their conqueror Varsili-Edelbert Corhall and his wife Magdaly-Philippa Bleier crowned Duke and Duchess of this land by their liege Grand Duchess Rosely-Elisa Timar I . In honor of this conquest the Grand Duchess renamed the land to Varsilgard.
The northern dukedom has always been rife with danger and its northern borders sees snow first and spring last. It is a land of rough people who work together and rely on their neighbor for aid. The danger means few people have the time or money required to pursue other activities like their southern neighbors. Once the lands of Mistwatch were part of their holdings but this region was lost to Draconic and Kraal conquest during the Thronewar.
Martial Training and Military service
Surrounded by danger the land can not merely rely on its powerful knightly orders, it ensures it's militia is well trained and supplied. Children coming of age (15-17) are required to partake in "military service" for at least one year. During this period they serve their local lords as militia, squires, guards,...etc and learn how to wield weapon, armor and shields. Some return home after this service, other stay voluntarily and even others join the service of a temple. Additionaly every household is required to have at least a single weapon and shield at their home in order to ensure the defense of their homes.
"Service" as they call it is an event celebrated and looked forward too. Often children learn how to wield weapons even beforehand in an attempt to increase their own ability to climb the social ladder and impress a knight. The Service is a source of boistering and pride for many and a celebrated event. Upon their return the children are welcomed into adulthood, meaning that they from that point onward may own property and may get married.
