Den Inderste Cirkel (The Inner Circle)

The Inner Circle is the organizing council of the Camarilla. Practically nothing is known about the Inner Circle, which takes pains to keep the identity of its members hidden. The public face of the Inner Circle are the Justicars and their Archon assistants. Members of the Inner Circle elect Justicars and otherwise establish the principles of Camarilla law. The Inner Circle is sometimes called the "Ivory Tower" or the "Inner Seven". The Inner Circle is often assumed to be a council of the most powerful Princes in the Camarilla. It is thought that Hardestadt, one of the sect's Founders, holds a seat in the Inner Circle.

Lovgiverne (The Justicars)

The Justicars are the most powerful visible component of the Camarilla's government, charged with adjudicating matters of the Traditions on a wide scale and acting as the eyes, ears, and hands of the Inner Circle. There is one justicar for each clan of the Camarilla, and each is served by several handpicked archons who act as their spies, enforcers, and representatives around the world.   Juliet Parr, Justicar of Clan Malkavian
Molly MacDonald, Justicar of Clan Nosferatu
Diana Iadanza, Justicar of Clan Toreador
Ian Carfax, Justicar of Clan Tremere
Lucinde, Justicar of Clan Ventrue
Kasim Bayar, Justicar of the Banu Haqim

Prince

A Prince is a vampire who has claimed leadership over a domain, usually a single city. They possess the authority of an elder as described in the Traditions.[1] The term can refer to Kindred of any gender.   Some domains are led by a quorum of Senators, holding the same powers of a Prince. Stephen Thunderhorse was a Senator of Providence.   The title "prince" is primarily used to describe Camarilla vampires, while the equivalent office in the Sabbat is generally Bishop or Archbishop. While the office in modern nights is synonymous with the Camarilla, the title stretches back to the feudal structures of the Dark Ages and is occasionally used by vampires who predate the Camarilla. "Prince" is used for rulers of any gender; despite the title's patrician origins, the modern usage of the term owes more to Machiavelli than royalty, and in any case sex has little meaning for Elder vampires.   Generally, a prince is advised by a council of primogen, Elders representing each of the major Clans of the Camarilla. Princes also delegate other offices: Scourge, Sheriff, Keeper of Elysium and any other offices specific to the city. Princes are also the primary interface with the government of the Camarilla – they are expected to assist Archons and Justicars as necessary.

Herald

The Herald acts as the Prince’s voice, making the Prince’s edicts known to the domain when the domain is too voluminous that the prince could do it by himself or simply appoint his seneschal for this task.   For example, a Herald recites the domain’s policies at Elysium, and speaks the results of any formal convocations where a Prince and her court define new laws. As well, a Herald announces the arrival of august and titled Kindred at formal events and at Elysium. This function can be abused, as a Herald may deliberately delay or misspeak the policy in question. Such Heralds rarely hold on to their positions after such treachery, however. If a Herald hasn’t spoken a policy aloud, that policy does not yet affect the Kindred. A Cainite can’t be retroactively held accountable for something he didn’t know broke the laws of the domain, especially if the policy recently changed or had been decided but not yet communicated.

Primogen

Primogen is a term used to describe Camarilla officials that, at least in theory, serve as the representatives of their respective clans to the prince of a city ruled by the sect. The term is both singular and plural, and refers to both individual representatives and to the Primogen council as a whole.   As with many Camarilla offices, the Primogeniture predates the very existence of the sect, and was pretty common during the Dark Ages. Theoretically, a primogen is the oldest vampire of his clan, and serves as a representative and voice for the clan in city affairs. In general, the ruling vampires of the city value the Primogen and their opinions. They are called in to consult on decisions, and their recommendations carry great weight.   In the modern era, the officeholder is usually decided within the clan proper by voting, violence, or someone higher up giving the orders, rather than simply comparing ages. Primogen traditionally make up a council that is the second most powerful institution in the city after the Princedom.   The power of the primogen varies with the power of the vampires that make it up: in some cities they are a rubber stamp for the prince, while in other cities they manage all affairs.

Clan Whip

Sometimes a Primogen will choose to appoint a second in command. The Clan Whip is tasked with collecting the opionions of the various members of the clan or faction, and serves as enforcer and advisor to the Primogen.

Vogter Af Fristedet (The Keeper of Elysium)

Fredens Vogter (The Sheriff)

Principal of Faith

In times of strife, kindred and kine alike turn to faith for comfort and guidance. The Principal of Faith is an ancient position that has recently come back in vogue in certain domains. The title covers a bewildering array of courtly advisors on matters of the soul, from the Christian preacher reminding the Kindred of the domain of their humanity or learned Haqimite to the methuselah-cultist trying to teach respect for the ancestors. some are intoerant fanatics who seek to root out heresy, others represent a broad congregation of believers, seeking deeper meaning from within the traditionally secular goverment of the night. The Principal has a varying degree of power, from officiant of courtly retuals that no-one really puts much stock in, to being able to override the Prince on matters of faith and forgiveness. Some principals are even consulted in matters of interpretation of the Traditions. Usually the Principal is appointed by the Prince, But they may also be popular preacher lifted to official power by their congregation. The faith of a powerful Principal often becomes the official religion of a domain.

The Shadow

The Shadow is formal advisor to a coterie, assigned by the Prince to shpherd them through the minefield of Kindred society. The Shadow does not lead the coterie, and has no special ability to punish or dicipline its members. They are typically a much older Kindred with unique wisdom or talents, worthy of guiding the young, or alternatively someone who has agered the Prince but cannot be openly punished, instead receiving a tahnkless task. A wise Shadow nurtures their coterie into a loyal and useful team of allies - but whether Prince or Shadow scores the first hit is unimportant, as long as the Camarilla wins.

Dødsbringeren (The Scourge)

Scourge is a term used to describe a vampire directly subordinated to a Prince. He is one of the muscles that a given Prince may call upon to do his bidding. The Scourge is responsible for the destruction of those vampires of 14th and higher generations and those illegally Embraced. Unlike the sheriff position, the scourge doesn't have a pretense of investigation, as they are searching out vampires who are guilty by their very nature.   This is a position most often found in paranoid domains where elders believe that fighting the symptoms of the Final Nights will stave off the coming of Gehenna. However, the Scourge originated as a position within vampiric courts in the dark ages, where a Cainite would act as the Prince's personal executioner, hunting enemies of the city (primarily hunting Caitiff and Autarkis) and acting when the sheriff could not (because of some political circumstances). It was reinstituted in Camarilla cities in the modern nights to eliminate illegal or weak vampires, namely thin-blooded, Caitiff, and unauthorized or rogue embraces.   The Scourges tend to be very unpopular and asocial Kindred. There isn't much possible room for promotion for a Scourge, but since they routinely destroy strange and secretive vampires, there is a chance that a Scourge scores a lucky kill on an Anathema and gets promoted to Alastor for that act.

  • New York City
New York city was, at the brink of the new millennium, a battleground between rival sects of vampires: the Camarilla and the Sabbat. Home to millions of mortals and hundreds of vampires, the city shook as the conflict took the form of economic espionage, political manipulation, and outright physical violence on and below the streets. In the end, the Camarilla succeeded in driving the Sabbat out of the city, and if the Camarilla rule was unsettled immediately after the war, the last two decades have solidified its rule into a more-or-less stable configuration - although not everyone is entirely pleased with the shape of that structure. Now, the Anarchs of New York were at first deeply suspicious of the new Prince that was chosen after the war, but they have come to find her more tolerable than a... more inflexible autocrat. Spared some of the obvious sources of friction by the new Prince's willingness to bend a little bit and accommodate reality, New York's Kindred have built what seems to be a more-or-less stable foundation on which they can pursue their individual and collective goals - for a time. But, to the victor go the spoils, and after ousting the Sabbat, the Camarilla lost no time in ensuring that their spoils were the best spoils. The Camarilla claims domain over the entire city and the Anarchs have found themselves - under their ostensible "leader" Baron Callihan - relegated mostly to the borough of the Bronx.
