Phoebe of the Grove
Satyr - Airhead, Compassionate, Kind

Backstory

No one knows Phoebe’s true name, not even Phoebe. She woke up beneath the boughs of a golden leafed tree, sunlight dancing through the canopy, a warm breeze humming a lullaby she somehow remembered. The forest around her whispered in familiar tones, and a small wolf pup with a pale coat nestled against her side as if they'd always known each other. The name Phoebe, something not born from her memory, but from the rustle of leaves and the song of birds that greeted her awakening.

Phoebe is a Satyr, but she is different from most. Her antlers are pale and bark like, her ears longer and more deer like than that of a goat. She speaks with the gentleness of a stream and walks with the grace of a drifting seed. Yet, for all her serenity, there's an air of disconnection, as though she stands half a step out of sync with the world. She often forgets things moments after they’re said, gets lost in conversations, or misinterprets the simplest metaphors. But one thing can be said, her heart is never in doubt.

She wandered for years, never aging, always smiling, her pup Fennel never far behind. She'd walk into villages and heal the sick with herbs no one had seen before, only to forget why she came in the first place. Many who crossed paths with her, thought she was a forest spirit in disguise. Few realized she was searching, always wandering, to find the pieces of herself that had been scattered like dandelion seeds in a windstorm.

When the crew of the Emberwake found her, she was standing knee deep in water, talking to a tree stump soaked underneath the waves as if it were crying. She told them the tree had lost its leaves too early and needed a song. No one believed her. No one but Sir Bron, the bear who spoke only in growls and roars. Somehow, Phoebe understood him perfectly. She tilted her head and nodded solemnly, then said, “You lost more than your voice, didn’t you?”

Arden offered her a place on the ship after that. Not out of pity or kindness, but because the wind changed when she started speaking to them, as if the Emberwake itself sighed with relief.

Fennel the Wolfdog

Fennel is fiercely loyal, strangely perceptive, and never seems to age, often nudging Phoebe away from danger or growling when people lie. Despite his small size and youthful energy, there is a weight in his eye as though he remembers things Phoebe cannot. When she is quiet, Fennel curls beside her. When she laughs, he howls along. He is her guardian, and perhaps the only one who remembers the forest before it forgot her.

"Fennel says people are like rivers. Sometimes they roar, sometimes they vanish underground... but they're always going somewhere, even if they don’t know where yet." - On Fennel's musings

"You don’t need to be brave all the time. Some days, even the sun hides behind the clouds. And the flowers still bloom." - On bravery
