Adventurers' Guild

One of the most controversial organizations on or in Ruathawaul is the guild for adventurers. The noble families would like to see the guild abolished even though they cannot be bothered to involve themselves with what they consider petty issues. With the Adventurers' Guild out of the way, the people would have no choice but to rely on the nobles to protect them and resolve their problems; this also provides the excuse for nobles to expand the tax levy. However the nobles might chafe at the existence of the guild, the guild does not trouble itself with the nobles.    The Adventurers' Guild's original mission was to match adventurous types with jobs people were needed for.  Typically it was for guards, border and property patrols, finding lost people, gathering rare resources, and exploration. It has now expanded to provide support to freelance adventurers and what would loosely be referred to as pest control. The environment of the labyrinth gives rise to increases in monster populations and routine patrols and expeditions are needed to curtail their numbers.    There is less unrest in towns where there is a branch of the Adventurers' Guild. Theives are much more aware that an adventurer could be hired to track them down to recover stolen goods. Overbearing nobles are kept in check by the constant threat of adventures revealing any possible nefarious deeds.   The original location for the Adventurers' Guild is located in Stonespire. The siege at Stormfort galvanized the Guild into expansion and briefly dabbling in founding and governing settlements. Many towns around Stonespire started as isolated outposts built to provide services for adventurers delving into the labyrinth. A recent, beginning fifteen years ago, reduction in monster activity in the labyrinth in many locations has resulted in a sharp decline of adventurers as they migrate to other branches. Less experienced adventurers are left with the remaining quests and their advisors are struggling to match them with the smaller talent pool. It has left a vacuum where there aren't enough adventurers experienced enough for some of the challenges. This change has not gone unnoticed as the noble families are increasing their efforts to eliminate the guild. The population is slowly getting trapped in a power struggle, but they still acknowledge that free adventurers from the guild were always there. Meanwhile, although the nobles have increased the number of guards in their employ, they only patrol the neighborhoods of the noble quarters. This increase in guards comes from the already limited number of potential recruits the guild could foster.
