Personal history

War. That is all Tharron has known, for the entirety of his brutal existence on the continent. He was orphaned by it and it shaped him into a monster, a mere tool. Daring to resist his cruel masters cost him everything, but liberation has never come easy. He now wanders the continent, fighting for the side of light and getting by with what he can. It is a lonely existence, but at least it’s a free one. Under Tharron’s jovial and pleasant exterior lies a suppressed darkness, an inevitable product of a childhood slaved to the Rocklands. His parents died when he was very young (under circumstances unknown to him), whith him a ward of the state. In the Rocklands, this meant living under a grueling regime where to be anything less than the best is to be a failure utterly unworthy of any notice. This world never suited Tharron, who could have grown into a considerable man of learning in a different life. Nonetheless, it forged him into a loyal warrior and what he could have been is naught more than a tragic irrelevance.   Once his training was complete, Tharron was recruited into the army of the Rocklands, a formidable fighting force in the thrall of darkness. In the army, Tharron rarely saw open battle, usually being left to guard outposts and trade convoys (though this still saw regular skirmishes with opportunistic bandits and marauding orcs). This afforded him some small degree of freedom (not to mention leaving him unaware of the atrocities wrought by the army), which allowed him to discuss with travelers of a world beyond the Rocklands, which enthralled young Tharron. However, his life meant these thoughts were scarcely more than a dream, and they were abandoned when he settled down with his wife Cecile in the Rocklands capital. A child came soon after, a son named Thibault. It was a restrictive life but it was all he had known, and he was happy.   Yet this all changed when Tharron reached 21, as the Black Queen began performing her attacks on the forces of light with renewed ferocity. The Rocklands were among those called to battle in her name, and Tharron would now see the destruction of war once again. The army of the Rocklands advanced from their brutal castles, utterly destroying those who stood against their goal to conquer Eremere. This did not sit well with Tharron, who harboured doubt in his heart as he marched into Dregonvell territory amongst an army of thousands. Fighting against the thegn of Dregonvell's forces momentarily dispelled that doubt, reminding him of his duty to the nation that raised him. This continued for a time until Tharron’s regiment was ordered to crush a rebellion brewing in the village of Whitburn.   Whitburn’s fighting men were quickly dispatched by the Rocklands’ trained soldiers, but his commanding officer Caramus did not stop there. He ordered that the village must be razed to the ground for their revolt, with every citizen slaughtered as an example. Tharron reluctantly complied and set into the town to find residents. An enemy combatant jumped out from a house, armed with little more than a pitchfork and an oversized helmet. Tharron broke the pitchfork with a swift swordstroke and sent the enemy sprawling. His sword was raised for a killing blow before Tharron realised that this was a child, no older than 11. With this revelation, the shackles of loyalty were shattered in one fell swoop, for a nation that commanded him to kill children was one unworthy of his servitude. Tharron urged the child to flee while he still could, and turned towards his comrades to try and stop the bloodshed.
