King of Drakes

When traveling Stelwen, one must watch the sky above, for the king of drakes soars above, looking for its next victim. Known as the Monarch Drake, this creature is the largest of its kind, often mistaken for being a full-fledged dragon. While it may not be a dragon, they are still dangerous and powerful animals only highly skilled individuals should face.

Morphology

The Monarch Drake is the largest species of drake found on Nostrina, averaging around six meters in length, though individuals have been found to be even bigger than that. Their wingspan averages around 7 meters, creating a terrifying shadow for those below. What often gets Monarch Drakes mistaken for dragons are their horns and spines, which resemble those found on lesser dragon species such as the Avarok. Fortunately, they can't breathe fire like a dragon, though their teeth and talons are still deadly weapons used to tear apart all who oppose the king of drakes.

Habitat

These creatures are found all over Stelwen and the surrounding islands, making their roosts in high peaks and large caves. There have been reports and sightings of Monarch Drakes in southern Ostenland and claims of them living in the Virginwood.

Diet

Monarch Drakes are opportunistic predators who will hunt anything they deem viable targets, which, most times, is everything.

Behavior

The king of drakes is a dangerous animal to approach at any point. While on the hunt, they will attack anyone they see as viable prey, whether it be a lone traveler or a full-sized Bunyip. Approaching a Monarch Drake's roost is even more dangerous, as they are highly territorial and will attack all who get close. Even if they drive off those who encroach on their territory, they often will continue to hunt them down afterward.

Reproduction and Growth

Monarch Drakes are believed to reproduce through eggs like most reptiles. However, due to the danger of studying these creatures, not much else is known about their growth cycles or their mating practices.
