Ghul
The Ghul are desert creatures, known and feared by people from the arid wastes of Aureus, the dryer steppes to the east of Tole-Buqa and the wild places of Chaha Ris and Sothis.
They are man-like in shape with grey-brown hide and features that are appallingly almost human, but with a bestial taint that gives them a predatory aspect. They lope easily in the desert wastes and can move almost silently when they are hunting for flesh. Some have the gift of speech though it has a guttural and inhuman tone to it and cannot easily pass for the speech of a human.
Ghul are man-eaters and while they prefer freshly killed meat they will settle gladly for ravening upon the dead and are known to raid tombs for that purpose. Many of the cultures who know the ways of Ghul have funeral rites and customs to keep the scavengers at bay.
When they strike they do so by stealth, attacking with talons and fangs. They are pragmatists and will prefer to attack the weak, injured or helpless. If need be they will wound a foe and flee, waiting for them to weaken before returning.
Some accounts say that the bite of a Ghul is venomous, causing seizures that render a victim helpless. Others say they have shamanic rites wherein they can communicate with and compel the spirits of those they devour.
