Stevelan Reno

Stevelen Reno, Keeper of Luck’s Gaze

“Another round? Of course—so long as your purse is honest and your trouble stays outside.”
Stevelen Reno runs the famed tavern, Luck’s Gaze, a favored haunt for gamblers, mercenaries, and adventurers alike. A steady hand behind the bar, he is known for his generosity, kindness, and unwavering sense of fairness. Yet, beneath his warm demeanor lies a man of sharp instincts, unyielding resolve, and the strength to back up his rules when needed.
“The dice fall where they may, but the wise man knows when to walk away.”

A Man Without a Past?

Little is known about Stevelen’s origins, and those who have tried to pry into his past have found themselves chasing whispers. He doesn’t speak of family, and no one can recall when—or why—he took up Rudd’s faith. What is certain is that he carries her favor, displaying clerical magic when necessary, whether to heal a wounded traveler or ward off a belligerent drunk.   Rumors abound—some say he was once a high-rolling gambler who lost everything and found redemption in the Lady of Luck. Others claim he was a soldier who turned his back on bloodshed. Whatever the truth, he never confirms nor denies the speculation, offering only a knowing smile and a fresh drink.
“Faith and fortune both favor the prepared.”

Strength Behind the Bar

Stevelen is no frail priest—he’s got a strong arm and a keen eye, keeping a well-worn bludgeon beneath the counter. He tolerates no cheating at the tables, no fighting within the tavern, and no foolishness at his expense. Many a drunkard has found themselves deposited unceremoniously in the street for testing his patience.   Still, for those in need, his generosity is boundless. A man down on his luck might find himself with a warm meal and a few coins to start fresh—but Stevelen will expect him to make good on it.
“A man’s luck turns as quick as the wind—best be the sort who knows how to sail it.”

The Eyepatch and the Gem

Stevelen is rarely seen without his eyepatch, and most assume it hides an old wound. But Guaco—ever the opportunist—claims to have glimpsed something else beneath it: a gemstone, set deep where his eye should be. What kind of gem? No one knows. When pressed, Reno simply smirks and changes the subject.   Some whisper that it’s a gambler’s lucky stone, granting him uncanny insight into dice and cards. Others believe it’s something more—a relic of Rudd, an artifact of fate, or even something cursed. Whatever the truth, no one has ever seen him remove it, and few dare to ask.
“Luck’s a fickle thing, but so am I.”

Faith and Fortune

Though not a traditional priest, Stevelen embodies Rudd’s tenets: daring, quick thinking, and the wisdom to know when to hold or fold. A shrine to the goddess rests behind the bar, small but well-kept. When someone offers a proper prayer, he ensures the offering is respected.   He doesn’t preach, but those who spend time in Luck’s Gaze might notice the small ways in which fortune and faith intertwine—little nudges of fate, a well-placed word of advice, a drink served just before disaster strikes. Whether luck or divine providence, only Stevelen truly knows.
“Make your own luck, but never spit in the eye of fortune.”

Connections and Speculations

Though not overtly political, Stevelen knows everyone who passes through his doors. He keeps his ear to the ground, catching whispers of deals, betrayals, and shifting tides. He won’t sell out a patron without cause, but neither will he suffer fools who bring trouble to his doorstep.   Those who respect his establishment find a steadfast ally, while those who cross him often find that fortune turns against them in strange, unexpected ways.
“The house always wins… eventually.”
