Elvish Myth, Sun and Moons
The Sun and Moons in Elven Mythology
The elves of Greyhawk view the celestial bodies not merely as natural phenomena but as sacred elements of divine power, deeply woven into their spiritual beliefs and culture. The sun and the two moons—Luna and Celene—are said to be the manifestations of gods or primal forces, each representing different aspects of life, magic, and destiny.
The light of the sun is the heart of creation, while the moons are the eyes of fate and mystery, watching over the world and guiding souls through life and beyond.
The Sun – Anarion
Known in elvish as Anarion (Golden Flame), the sun is the gift of Corellon Larethian, the creator of the elves. It symbolizes life, strength, and the eternal cycle of renewal. According to elven myth, Anarion was born from Corellon’s first victory over the forces of darkness, igniting the sky to banish shadow and bring light to the world.- Symbolism: Anarion represents vitality, truth, and vigilance. It is seen as the guardian of life, sustaining the forests and fields.
- Rituals: During the dawn and at midday, elves perform rituals of renewal and protection in honor of Anarion.
- Aspect of Corellon: The sun is considered the right eye of Corellon, always watching over the elves during their waking hours.
The Greater Moon – Ithilnar (Luna)
Called Ithilnar (Silver Lantern) by the elves, Luna is the larger of the two moons. It is a steady and dependable celestial body, representing protection, destiny, and the cycle of life. Ithilnar is said to be the watchful eye of Sehanine Moonbow, the goddess of dreams and the afterlife.- Symbolism: Ithilnar represents stability, protection, and the tangible aspects of fate. Its phases mark the passage of time and cycles of life.
- Mythic Origin: Born from Sehanine’s tears after her first battle with the forces of chaos, Ithilnar serves as a beacon of hope and guidance.
- Rituals: Ithilnar is venerated during its full phase in rituals of strength and renewal, particularly by warriors and guardians.
The Lesser Moon – Mórilindë (Celene)
Known as Mórilindë (Song of the Twilight), Celene is the smaller, more mysterious moon. Its unpredictable phases and bluish-green hue make it a symbol of magic, hidden knowledge, and the ethereal world. The elves believe that Mórilindë is a bridge between the Prime Material Plane and the Feywild.- Symbolism: Mórilindë embodies magic, mystery, and the unseen forces that shape destiny.
- Mythic Origin: Formed from the last breath of Corellon’s first dream, Mórilindë is a vessel for visions and arcane power.
- Rituals: Celene’s rare full phases are times for divination, dream-walking, and secret rites performed by seers and mages.
Tirionel – The Twilight Convergence
When both moons align in the sky, it is called Tirionel (The Twilight Convergence), a rare and powerful event. The elves believe that during this time, the veil between worlds thins, and great changes in fate can occur.- Tirionel is seen as a time of transition, when prophecies may be revealed, and ancient powers may stir once again.
- It is also believed that the spirits of ancestors draw closer to the living, offering guidance—or warnings.
In the time of Tirionel, the balance of light and shadow tilts, and the world holds its breath.
