A Hero's Silence

The Quest of Vargas the Bard

Character Reflection

Vargas comes from a line of musicians, and his father’s famous song, A Hero's Silence, is about orcs sacking a town and a hero saving them. But in reality, the hero didn't come, and Vargas was chased from his town and his family was slain. Now he's beginning to believe he may actually be that hero.

Ghostly Vision

During the feast of Lemuralia, Vargas summoned the ghosts of his past. Slowly, the room went dark until an apparition of his dead mother appears. She was young, much younger than Vargas remembered her being. She cried at the sight of her son and told him she misses him dearly but can wait to see him in the afterlife.   Vargas's mother then begins to hum, and then sing, A Hero’s Silence. First a few chords, then a few more, and slowly Vargas sang with her and mother and son sang together like the old times. She told him then she is haunted by the music, and cannot rest peacefully because Vargas's father is missing, gone from the spirit world, or gone from the real world . . . or both?

Benefits of the Dead

After the ghost spins into a veil of stars that falls around the room, Vargas is left with a warm feeling of comfort that bestows upon him the following long term benefit:

A Mother’s Blessing:

First damage after a long rest deals 50% less damage

All that is good comes from the melodies, all that is evil, is without harmony - Haldir of Lothlórien

Quest of Champions

Clue & Hook

Vargas's Mother knows a great and terrible battle is before him soon, and that he must concentrate on that now. But once Vargas overcomes these trials, that is defeated, she will come back, and tell him of his father’s soul’s whereabouts, and maybe she can help bring him home.   She instructs him to find different strings to a magical liar and that when it plays A Hero’s Silence, it will bring his father's soul back and perhaps, tell Vargas what befell him so dastardly.
