End of Ensear's War against the Hells.
Diplomatic action
9-262, End of the war
An abbreviated account of the events that brought about the end of Ensear's campaign to subjugate the Nine Hells.
In the 4th year of her invasion of the second layer, she received an emissary from Barudan's Keep, requesting she meet in parlay. It suggested that her bloodshed need not continue, and that the Archdevil's recognized her rulership of Avernus; thus, she had right to meet and deal with them directly.
While she suspected this was a trap, she knew it would nonetheless prove useful. She knew the Archdevil's were bound by blood and soul to certain rules, and could not take action against her under such conditions.
And so, she made her way unhindered with two of her finest warriors to the Mercury Keep. She was allowed entry with her envoy, much to the distaste of the devils. Here, she would be led to a large chamber surrounded by seating. In this arena, on a pedestal, sat Mammon, Archdevil of the 8th layer, flanked by Barudan and Belial standing beside. The seats of the crowd were packed with devils of all kinds, who chattered away.
The exchange to follow was conducted almost exclusively between Ensear and Mammon. Mammon, renowned for his mastery of contracts and debate, spoke for the other Archdevils. As mammon himself stated, they knew that it would be impossible for them to stave her off forever, given her divine status. So, terms were proposed and altered in a discussion that lasted for two days. When they had finished, the terms, abbreviated for convenience, were as follows:
The Terms of the Archdevils.
- Ensear would relinquish rulership of Avernus and the Archdevil title, reinstating Zariel.
The angels would leave the hells and cease their invasion.
Ensear would not return to the hells unless directly invited by Mammon or Asmodeus.
Ensear would be granted tribute by the Archdevils themselves so long as she maintained a truce.
The Devils would no longer partake in slanderous prayer while they occupied the Mortal Plane, and those who did so would be considered fair marks for her and her angels.
Ensear's Terms.
- The Archdevils would provide her with materials found only in the hells every era in an amount of her choosing.
Ensear would retain ownership of the Devil's Forge, a location she had seized.
Ensear would be granted an arcane link to the first layer, allowing her to rend the heat from it should she choose. For her to invoke this power, it would only be if the terms of the contract were broken.
If any of these terms on either side were broken, the truce would no longer stand, and the contract would become void.
The final term was uproarious, with Barudan voicing his disagreement before being halted by Mammon, who raised his hand to silence barudan and simply replied, "agreed," adding it to their terms.
After their conditions were resolved, Mammon produced a black pen and fine parchment, writing the lengthy document by hand. At the end, he left space for signatures. Mammon wrote his in his own blood, whereupon it dissipated, returning a moment later with the scrawled signatures of the other Archdevils. Ensear then added her own in the dark ink of mammons pen.
