The Stoneborn

These creatures were originally carved as protectors for temples and castles but were given life by forgotten, forbbiden magic. Over time, the magic twisted them into something ofr more terrifying and grotesque than the artists ever intended. Now, they lurk in the shadows of ancient ruins like The Eerie Ruins of Weston, watching over their domain with eerie lifeless eyes. Their bodies are still stone, but cracked and warped, with patches of their carved forms worn smooth by centuries of decay and erosion.    They have the classic look of gargoyles, with wings, fangs, and claws but their forms are unnveringly wrong. Their wings are tattered, their stone flesh is deformed with jagged unnatural angles. Some have multiple faces, all twisted i nagony and others may have far too many limbs, legs where there shouldn't be or arms that end in cracked claws reaching out desperately.    During the day, they remain perfectly still, blending into the architecture as statues. But by night, they stir to life, creping along the rooftops, leaping between spires and descending on unsuspecting victims. The grotesque nature of their movments mirrors their appearance - they move with jerky, unsettling motions, as if their bodies weren't meant to be mobile. Their strength comes from the unnatural magic that binds them to stone, making them nearly invulnerable to physical attacks.    The Stoneborn are masters of intimidation. Their grotesque forms emit an aura of dread, paralysing those who gaze upon them for too long. They feed off the fear and shock of those they hunt, slowly petrifying their victims as fear overwhelms them. Over time, the victims themselves begin to turn to stone, becoming part of the gargoyle horde.    In their twisted form, they no longer serve the purpose they were carved for. Instead they have become guardians of the dead, cursed to stalk the grounds of ancient tombs and ruins. Some legends say they guard the spirits of those buried beneath them, while others claim they're cursed to hunt anyone who tried to defile these places.    The Stoneborn are feared by locals who live or work in the area. It's said that they hunt during nights of thunderstorms, where the crashing thunder and lightning hide and obscure their movements. Superstitions say that if you stare at one too long during the day, it will remember you and come for you when darkness falls.
