The Shadeclaw
The Shadeclaw is a lithe, panther like creature with a body built for stealth and speed. Its fur is sleek and dark, mottled with patches that shimmer faintly in low light, allowing it to blend seamlessly into shadows. It has multiple eyes that help it detect even the smallest movements in the dark, the pupils dilating to absorb as much light as possible in total darkness. The smaller outer eyes are able to detect light from beyond the visible light spectrum, extending its field of view at night.
The shadeclaw hunts with cat-like patience, silently stalking its prey for hours or event days, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. It can clumb trees and scale cliffs with ease, moving with a grace and silence that makes it nearly invisible. It communicates through low-frequency growls and purrs, imperceptible to most creatures, making it capable of coordinating with others of its kind during hunts.
What sets it apart from other predators is its sensitivity to fear pheremones; the more afraid its prey, the stronger its desire to hunt it. It uses this ability to track prey across long distances, its presence upon nearing its prey inducing a paranoid confusion, afraid to move in any direction for fear of being watched from all angles.
Shadeclaws are typically solitary hunters, but will hunt in small packs, using pack tactics to isolate and corner their prey where the prey moves in herds. They circle in the darkness, herding their victims into a state of panic where fear overwhelms them. The pack communicates through eerie, almost hypnotic howls that echo through the night, disorientating and terrifying their prey.
In lore, Shadeclaws are seen as the embodiement of nightmares, feared by all who walk the wilderness after dark. Some say the Shadeclaw can only be summoned by the truly wicked, drawn to those who have deep, hidden fears or guilt. A single Shadeclaw is terrifying alone, but a pack is enough to send entire villages into fervored fleeing.
