Hakay'chi'ik Species in Belerion | World Anvil

Hakay'chi'ik (Hah-KAY-chee-ICK)

Hakay'Chi'ik is native only to the warm, crystal blue waters of the Shark Tooth Isles, though they are capable of diving to unfathomable depths.
With it's blue-green shell, adorned with gold swirls, Hakay'chi'ik is a master of ocean camoflauge, using it's golden swirls to simultaneously mimic the suns' glint on the waves to confuse hunters and attract smaller fish to prey on. It will feed for 5 hours at a time, which will sustain it for 13 weeks. This is what makes sighting them so incredibly uncommon. Thought to be among the oldest creatures in the world, they are thought to live up to 300 years, though this is not confirmed. Scholars believe that counting the rings of the golden swirl will reveal the age of a Hakay'chi'ik, but Ki'Inori tradition prevents them from seeing a dead Hakay'chi'ik to make any further observations about these creatures.
Said to be the oldest and wisest creatures in the world, these graceful sea beasts will impart an ancient wisdom to any who can successfully subdue them. However, it is also said that to find the body of such a creature without having known it in life will visit grave misfortune upon the household of the one who finds it. Ki'inori fisherman have long since abandoned the folly of trying to subdue a Hakay'chi'ik, preferring instead to take it is a sun-kissed sign from the sun god Ki'Inoro himself when the water glints in the sunlight, and it turns out to be a Hakay'chi'ik surfacing to eat, as this always means a bountiful catch.
As a result, the Ki'inori revere the Hakay'chi'ik as a creature of power - so much so that they incorporated it into their tribal symbol: a fiery spiral sun with rays laid out like the fins, head and tail of a Hakay'chi'ik.
