Resurrection is a delicate and costly process, demanding both physical and spiritual recovery. Although the soul can be returned to the body, the toll it takes on those who are resurrected can manifest in multiple ways—affecting their vitality, capabilities, and even their progression.
Resurrection Effects:
Temporary Negative Levels:
When a character is resurrected by a spell that normally results in level loss, instead of permanent level reduction, the character gains four temporary negative levels. These levels gradually disappear at a rate of one per week, restoring the character’s strength and abilities over time. The recovery period is meant to represent the body’s adjustment and the soul’s reintegration.
Greater Restoration Assistance:
A greater restoration spell can be used to remove one temporary negative level per casting, allowing for faster recovery if the character has the resources available. This makes it possible for those with powerful allies or sufficient preparation to mitigate the effects more rapidly.
Experience Debt Instead of Loss:
Resurrection does not result in an immediate loss of experience points. However, there is a spiritual debt that must be repaid. An experience debt is levied, amounting to 1,000 XP times the character’s current level. Until this debt is repaid, all XP gains are reduced by this amount. For example, a 10th-level character would incur a debt of 10,000 XP, meaning the first 10,000 XP gained after resurrection would go entirely toward paying off this debt.
