Origin Story
Ridgeport
Growing up in the fight pits in the slums of Ridgeport, Toshi grew to be a powerful force in the underground fighting circuit. Eventually, his exploits were noticed by the goblin gangster Bigs Portly. Bigs adopted Toshi into his ranks, and brought him to the big league colosseum fights. He used Toshi to make tons of gold by betting on him. He would throw Toshi into incredibly dangerous fights where the odds were against him over and over, and Toshi never failed to deliver. Toshi's success ended up becoming his downfall. As he racked up the wins, the odds started to pay out less and less. Soon he became the favorite in every fight. Bigs saw his profits starting to dwindle, and decided to cut his losses. He set up a fight between Toshi and an unknown Goliath merc to finish the champion off. Toshi was slated to win, 100:1. He had taken on bigger and more well known fighters in the past, and this new challenger did not have a name about him. The night before the fight, Bigs Portly called for a dinner with Toshi, and fed him a poison apple. Bigs told Toshi that he needed to take the fall. Toshi, having grown a sense of honor, defied Bigs. Bigs' poison did not take immediate effect, but was delayed in it's effects. After the dinner, Toshi met up with his only friend from the organization, a changeling called Sky. Sky had learned of the poison apple and it's effects, and gave him a piece of bread to help absorb and dull the effects. She dared not tell Toshi of the poison, lest Bigs find out and have her killed. The next day, Toshi entered the arena to massive applause and a splitting headache. Despite his condition getting worse and worse throughout the fight, he ended up defeating the Goliath in a close fight. Bigs lost thousands of PP. In the fighter's room, Sky came to Toshi's rescue once more. He was barely conscious, with multiple broken bones and a swollen jaw. Sky gave him an antidote for the poison, and told him what awaited him on the door to the outside. Thins and Smalls, Bigs' two orcish bodyguards. Before Toshi could object, she shifted her form and became a copy of him. She knocked him out with a quick spell and shoved him into a closet. Toshi came too just as Thins and Smalls broke the door down. He saw them dragging Sky out the door, still in his form. That was the last he ever saw of her. When he was finally recovered enough, he tried to find Bigs and confront him. Through his investigations, he discovered that Sky had escaped capture and was lost somewhere in the city.a+nd*nt
The Grey Woods
Toshi was run out of Ridgeport. Disillusioned with the life he had lived so far, he decided to take up life as a hermit. He found himself in the Grey Woods. Initially, he fought against the land, trying to cut down trees and build shelter that way. He found the structures he would build kept falling apart or being attacked by wild animals. He never had the heart to attack any of these animals, but would make loud noises instead to try and scare them off. It was at this point that he met Golo, the druid shepherd of the forest. Golo studied Toshi and decided to test him. He presented himself to Toshi three times. First, as a stag while Toshi was hungry. When Toshi refused to hunt him, Golo led Toshi to a fresh water spring surrounded by goodberry bushes. The second time as a bear, which ate the bushes. When Toshi refused to attack him, Golo led him to a cave for shelter. The third time, he arrived as a racoon, who stole Toshi's weapons and supplies. When Toshi did not even rise to stop him, Golo revealed himself properly. He taught Toshi the nuances of living as a hermit. How to grow food safely, when to stay hidden, and when to help lost travelers find their way out of the wood.
The Adventure Begins
It had been twenty long years in The Grey Woods. Toshi had become a bone-fide hermit of the forest. Golo had given him the charge to lead travelers through the woods on the safest and quickest path possible. One day, Toshi met the traveler [Nameless Dwarf Merchant] and his party. Toshi offered to be his guide in exchange for the promise that a trade route would not travel through The Grey Woods. As the merchant was about to agree, an unnatural fog filled the air. Toshi knew trouble was here. As he took a few steps through the fog to what he thought was safe ground, he found a cave that was not there before. The merchant and party immediately stormed the cave, and Toshi found himself along for the ride. Whatever made this cave appear was definitely a traveler, and it was his job to help it leave the forest as quickly as possible. The party found a pseudodragon and it's horde of treasures. They quickly defeated it and claimed the horde for their own. Toshi initially declined his share, for what use does a hermit have of gold and treasure? As they were leaving the cave, Golo appeared, and charged Toshi with one more task. Leave this forest, and use this newfound wealth to help others, as Golo once helped Toshi. Toshi took these words to heart and joined the merchant in his quest to set up a new trading post.
