Elthain
Elthain the Hermit
Elthain is an Eladrian Elf hermit who lives in a small mountain tower in the Lililian Mountain Range. There he keeps a pack of dogs, grows a garden, and studies the past. He is particularly interested in The Missing, and studies the event relentlessly.
Species
Elthain is an Eladrian Elf. Eladrians are elves of the seasons, and will change their appearances and abilities based on their general outlook. Elthain stays mostly in his Summer Form, as it helps his crops grow, and keeps his house warm for the dogs, even at this higher altitude. However, he has been known to slip into his Winter Form whenever his work would start to stall again.
Research
Elthain spends his days mostly focused on studying The Missing. He is technically old enough to have witnessed it. Elthain is 630 years old, and The Missing happened 500 some years ago. The fact that he can't remember anything around that event has thoroughly troubled him. He has dedicated himself to gather all accounts of the The Missing that he can find, and to solve what exactly happened. However, it seems any time he gets close to a break through, something happens around the tower. A dog gets sick, a crop fails, a window cracks. He always has to stop and fix the issues (often times by going into town.) When he returns to his work, no matter how well he remembers that he laid it out, no matter what notes he leaves himself, it all seems like gibberish to him. This only leads to frustrate him more and more. The paranoia that something magical is happening has led him to creating an anti-magic room in his tower, and that's where he keeps all of his work.
Mentorship
One day, when Elthain had to go to town to gather new seeds after a failed crop, and he met a young human named Violet May. She showed potential as a wizard, and so he offered to take her under his wing. She accepted. At the tower, Violet was trained in how to survive as a hermit. She learned how to grow crops, do household maintenance, and raise dogs. In her downtime, she was taught how to study the arcane. Elthain made it clear that it was important to learn how to learn, and not just be taught spells. After Elthain was satisfied that Violet knew how to learn, he would leave her alone in his arcane study with his collection of spellbooks while he went back to researching The Missing.
Alone Again
One day, after hitting a particularly bad wall in his research, Elthain yelled at Violet for a small inconsequential thing. He immediately regretted it and apologized. He decided it was time for Violet to go grow on her own. He had given her the basic tools, and he saw the call to adventure flaring in her eyes. It wouldn't have been fair to keep her there any longer. His next task for her: write your own spellbook. He gave her the materials and let her go in the study. The head of his herd of dogs had recently become pregnant. He gave Violet until this new litter would be ready to leave their mother to study. When the pups were old enough, Elthain gave Violet her pick of the pups. When she picked her pup, he sent her on her way with a letter of recommendation to an adventurer's tavern.
After she left, he returned to his research. He would keep in contact with her, replying any time he received mail from her. However, he still worries about her from time to time, and will scry on her with his crystal ball. Two years after she left, he had not received mail from her in two months, much longer than she had ever gone without writing. He checked in on her with his crystal ball to see a heart dropping sight. Violet was unconscious in a healer's camp, missing an arm. He resisted his urge to teleport to her immediately. He didn't want her to know that he had been spying on her, nor did he want to be an easy way out. Violet would have to face this on her own. If she reached out, he would gladly help, but Elthain would not ruin her autonomy as an adventurer. When mail from her finally did come, she made no mention of her missing arm. He replied as normal, and never let on that he knew.
Spellkit
Elthain is powerful wizard. He uses the powers of the portent to scry on the past, the present or the future. He knows many higher level spells and has even developed a few spells himself to help with historical studies.
- Elthain's Arcane Readings: R V S M (one bottle of magical ink) duration 1 hour 3rd level spell: A document recovers words that have been lost to non magical damage. If there are holes in the document, the missing text will glow in the air over the missing parts until the spell ends. If there is room on the sheet, the missing words will appear inked in, and it will last beyond the spell.
- Elthain's Easy Dog Food: R S M (rotten meat) Casting time 1 minute: 2nd level spell: the rotting meat will purify, and fall apart into small kibble-like bites. Any dog (or other meat eating familiar) that eats this will give any ally in a 15 ft radius advantage on attacks for the next 4 hours.
- Elthain's Prestrike V S Casting time: 12 seconds (two combat actions) 9th level spell: Shoot a lightning bolt through time targeting a person within eyesight. Chose either Past/Future. A target takes 10d6 damage in one hour in the Past/Future. If this kills a monster, heal all damage that the creature did in the past hour. If this brings a creature back to life, take 5d12 time damage, as the strings of reality have been strummed.
