Marlish Language
Marlish is a language spoken by Marlishmen and their Charlish cousins. It can be compared grammatically and phonetically to Northtongue, the language of the Northmen. Various regional accents have developed over the years, so it is reasonably easy to surmise the origin of a native Marlish speaker; this divide is most prevalent between the form of the language spoken in the Kingdom of Marlam, and the version spoken in the Duchy of Charl.
Writing System
Marlish can be written in its own native script, an adaption of the runic script used throughout Northwind. However, this script has fallen out of use in many parts of the Duchy of Charl, where the Elven script is now more commonly used. The adoption of the Elven script was largely a political move to align the Duchy with its then-powerful neighbor, the Elven Empire of Moreliath. In the Kingdom of Marlam, the traditional Marlish script remains in regular use, particularly in formal and ceremonial contexts.
