Untitled Journal in Baron's Library
Inside you see scrawlings detailing information about the Kartova family and it is written in the Baron’s hand, as stated on one of the first pages of the journal.
Anastasia Kartova Petrovich – the eldest daughter of Burgomaster Kartov, sullied herself in illicit affair with one of the Devil’s servants. Petya was a member of the Zarovan tribe amongst his people and is the grandson of Eva, a prominent member amongst their Ilk, and brother of Maruschka. He sired a child with his wife Ilyana, Mikhail.
In his youth, Petya was known as a womanizer among his kin. He entered a romantic relationship with Anastasia Petrovich for a time but earned the rightful wrath of Burgomaster Kartov. After Andrei accused Petya for stealing, Jander Sunstar stepped in to save him. After that, Anastasia and Petya said their goodbyes, and Petya took Jander to the Tser Camp. After Eva told him that Jander was a vampire, Petya risked his life to go back to inform Anastasia of the danger Jander might pose. Petya unknowingly sired a child with Anastasia Petrovich and left her pregnant. That child's name was Sasha Petrovich. Given how long ago he lived, Petya is most likely deceased.
In 485, the Kartova Family and their cottage were assaulted by the Devil, Jander, and some of the Devil’s minions. The Devil was intent upon punishing him for cheating him out of tax money and fealty he believed himself to be owed…. Enter long tangent defaming and slandering the Devil…. Jander made protest to the activities of the other vampires. However, ultimately he betrayed that promise to never let harm come to Anastasia through actions he was involved with. The only survivors of the attack were Alexi (who was absent at the time) and Ludmilla, whom lived thanks to the restraint Jander used in feeding upon her, I believe this to be evidence of her being touched by the Morning Lord. In order to prevent the Kartova household from rising again as vampires, Martyn Pelkar and Alexi staked and properly disposed of the corpses.
Alexi Petrovich - was said to have escaped the massacre as he was not present at the time it took place. Sasha had snuck out earlier that night with Kolya in order to see the Standing Stones of Shadowgrange Village. Upon his return, Sasha discovered his home ablaze, all of his family murdered (save for his aunt Ludmilla). Martyn, the then-leader of the emerging Faith of the Morninglord came to his assistance, helping the young Sasha to lay the bodies to rest. After the incident, Martyn subsequently adopted Sasha. Sasha later become one of the Morninglord's priests, with a mission of personal vengeance against the vampires responsible and their wicked kin. He eventually became known as the Dawn Healer by the rising Faith of the Morninglord.
In 498, Alexi was seduced by one of the Devil’s slaves, a so name Katya. After months of doing the Morning Lord’s work of ridding Shadowgrange of the Devil’s vermin, he rescued Leisl, would later go on to aid him and the vampire Jander Sunstar in their mission to rid Barovia of the Devil.
In 500, Sunstar would contact Alexi and Leisl to eliminate the Devil, outing the count as both vampire and the murderer of Sasha's family. Subsequently, Jander, Sasha, and Liesl journeyed into Castle Ravenloft to retrieve the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind and destroy the Devil. After putting to rest the undead spirit of Sergei von Zarovich and retrieving the Icon, the trio were ambushed by the Devil and his forces due to Katya's treachery, in whichshe badly injured Leisl. However, Katrina was put to flight, and Devil’s minions routed or killed. The Devil suffered the Holy Wrath of the Symbol, but he escaped total destruction with a spell where we was forced into hibernation.
Although still standing, Sasha and his allies' victory was a Pyrrhic one. They had failed in their mission to permanently rid the Land of Mists of the Devil and Leisl was most likely infected with lycanthropy. In a moment of revelation, Jandar realized his fight against the Devil was simply following the machinations of the Dark Powers. He let himself be consumed by the dawning sun whereas Sasha and Leisl went into hiding. It is believed they found refuge in Vallaki where they helped establish the foundation of the Church of the Morning Lord.
Over time, Sasha's oath to destroy the Devil and his brood evolved into the Midnight Clarion, a covert policy of destruction to the undead, though mercy to afflicted lycanthropes.
Ludmilla Kartova Radavich - was he younger daughter of Burgomaster Kartov, my his soul be at peace under the Morning lord’s light. She is one of the only survivors of the massacre at the Kartov Cottage that was orchestrated by the Devil for those who would resist his tyranny. The devil and most of his other minions drained and eviscerated most of this noble line as well as other villagers in Shadowgrange. After surviving the massacre, Ludmilla would go on to marry Nikolai Radavich who would take up the mantle of Burgomaster of Shadowgrange.
