Concordat
The city state of concordat lies on the plain of brass, and functions as the last post of the mundane world before the "long descent," it thus also functions as a last defence against any inhabitants of the malebolge who might incur upwards. Its name stems from the agreement, or concord, that was made between the Hell-Lords and the Lord of Brass that his city would be open to residents of both the mundane world and the malebolge, and that trade may take place there, but that no war should break forth, and that no passage may be gained except that which was prearranged across the plain of brass--the oldest of the known bridges to hell.
Demographics
The city of Concordat has a diverse mix of inhabitants, with around 55% of the population stemming from lands outside the mundane world (most of these are from the Malebolge, the Astral Sea, or great plains of earth and fire). With the rest being either natives of the plain of Brass (around 30%) or mortals from various lands in the mundane world (around 15%) who are there to trade, or accomplish some other business.
Government
Concordat is ruled by Perihelion, the Great Lord Concordat of Brass, Keeper of the Flame.
He rules the city and by extension, the entirety of the Plain of Brass, with a direct and careful rule.
All transactions in the city are taxed, with the money funding the vast infrastructure of the city, and its defences, which ensure its future position as the main and central point for trade between the Malebolge and the Mundane World.
Defences
Built into the Murgo Plateau, right at the point where the long descent splits the altiplano in two points, Concordat houses two impressive gates positioned at either side of the Xyston Pillar, with the Four Sisters (towers) built into the rock high above both gates. Within the butte itself is a further series of defensive structures (some accessible only by cable car with further others only by hidden excavations within the stone itself). The city also has an inner and outer wall, with the outer wall jutting out onto the plain of brass with its primary entrance (The Gate of Opal) on its western side where the Road of Brass meets the city. Other, smaller gates exist at various points of the outer wall's circumference. The Inner walls which are built into the escarpment surrounding the Pillar mean that its outward face is much taller than its inner floor. The inner wall also separates the
Industry & Trade
Trade is vast and remarkable. Very few raw materials themselves are produced by Concordat outside of a few exceptions, though the Plain of Brass has impressive mining operations, and the smithing industry in the city if unrivaled. These are not where the bulk of Concordat's wealth derives, however. Concordat charges a substantial tax on all trade that takes place inside the walls of the city. Though many have grumbled over the high cost of doing business in the city, the fact remains that Concordat controls the main access point to and from the Malebolge, and it ensures a safe trading atmosphere. The tax very quickly becomes a much more acceptable reality when the alternatives are a trip through the astral sea, or a descent through some other fissure or crack in the fabric of the mundane.
Natural Resources
Copper and Zinc are plentiful, as is Iron ore, Palladium, Manganese, and Nickel. The few shrublands that exist around the plain of brass house some small game, and a few larger ruminants, though not enough for any sort of industry based around them. On the mundane end of the plain of brass exist plentiful farms, before the plain becomes too harsh and untillable. These farms supply much of the city's food supply, and though they do not provide any income for the city, are vital to its survival.
