Warriors of the North
Barbarians who follow the Path of the Varangian are the fearsome warriors of the north, bound by their code of honor and mastery of heavy armor. They are the elite guards, raiders, and shock troops of the Palischian Kingdom, renowned for their indomitable spirit in battle and their proficiency in naval warfare. The Varangian Guard, composed of these stalwart warriors, serves as the personal protectors of the royal family and as a terrifying force on the battlefield.
Varangian Armor: When you choose this path at 3rd level, your experience in wearing heavy armor and fighting in close quarters grants you the following benefits:
• Heavy Armor Proficiency: You gain proficiency with heavy armor, and you can rage while wearing heavy armor.
• Unyielding Endurance: While raging and wearing heavy armor, you gain a +1 bonus to AC. Additionally, you can use your Strength modifier instead of Dexterity for determining your AC while wearing heavy armor.
Sea Raider: When you level up this path to 5th level, you learn to turn the tide against the enemy, both on land and aboard a ship.
• Tide Reaver: You gain proficiency with rolls and checks concerning sailing ships and airships. When you are on a ship, you can use a bonus action to grant advantage on an attack roll or skill check to a creature within 30 feet of you until the start of your next turn.
• Relentless Assault: When you are raging and hit a creature with a melee weapon attack, you can use a bonus action to make an additional melee weapon attack against the same creature. This additional attack cannot benefit from extra damage from features like Great Weapon Master or Polearm Master.
Unbreakable Will: At 10th level, your indomitable spirit makes you resistant to effects that would weaken your resolve:
• Resilience of the North: You have advantage on saving throws against being frightened or charmed.
• Varangian War Cry: When you enter a rage, you can let out a terrifying war cry. All enemies within 30 feet of you that can hear you must make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Strength modifier) or become frightened of you until the end of your next turn.
Shield of the North:
At 14th level, your connection to your ancestral homeland and the Varangian Guard’s unyielding spirit imbues you with legendary resilience:
• Unstoppable Fury: While raging and wearing heavy armor, when you are reduced to 0 hit points, you can use your reaction to drop to 1 hit point instead. You can use this feature once per long rest.
• Varangian’s Legacy: Your presence on the battlefield inspires fear and respect. When you reduce a creature to 0 hit points while raging, you can choose to make an additional melee attack as part of the same action.
