Ruuben’s Bluff

Purpose / Function

Used primarily during the beginning years of Balbura, Ruuben’s Bluff was denoted as a safe haven for previously-pillaged produce. Alongside hiding whatever others desired to steal, underground extensions to housing allowed for the chilling of meat and food items, Ruuben breathing snow into the earth to cool it. This temperature drop creates the ever-present mist Ruuben’s Bluff is well known for. In modern years, it is the home of Ruuben’s most renown priestesses, serving as a safe haven during war for pregnant women and children.

History

During the first years after Ruuben’s emergence from the Lygos Sea and the beginnings of what is now the richest mercantile capital in the Sea Belt, the humble settlement of Balbura frequently came under attack by the brutish Saltmongers. Having been known to possess the largest abundance of oil and whale meat, Saltmongers were notoriously interested in the goings-on of Balburan trade routes. At their worst, it is rumored that the Saltmongers attempted to enslave Balburan cargo ships near the coast, immediately beckoning Ruuben’s anger from the depths of the Lygos Sea. This was the first appearance of the famous Ruuben Fire, now widely feared and instantly recognizable by its turquoise hue and ability to burn underwater. Though much more kindred to hearsay than fact, some believe that the first use of Ruuben Fire was so catastrophic that the sea “sat at a boil” until the moon cooled its surface. Whether boiled or not, the Saltmongers’ presence was wiped from the Lygos as well as from Balburan trade routes.   After this experience, Ruuben raised half of Balbura’s shore into a steep cliff and introduced extending housing below ground. Alongside hiding their entrances with blessed shawls, the newly-built cellars would come to hide all manner of produce for later generations, protecting much of the empire’s beginning citizens from further pillaging simply by way of hiding things most precious to them.   In modern years, the foggy outcropping serves as a home to much of the temple’s high priestesses. Most acolytes aspire to acquiring a home on Ruuben’s Bluff, an achievement very few followers have reached.   In written law, Ruuben’s Bluff is the designated citadel for children and nursing mothers during future wartime plights, the underground dwellings rumored to have expanded far below where they originally began.
