Dark Star Mounts
The Star Mounts, also known as Dark Star Mounts due to the dark stone that they were made from, are an impressive and forbidding peaks of two mountains, located in the center of the Dark Forest.
Geography
The mountains are very difficult to traverse. The terrain is incredibly steep and no known passes extend into the space between the two peaks, where there is said to be an elevated balley hidden away from the surrounding world. Due to the high winds that are constantly whipping across the peaks, it is nearly impossible for a creature less powerful that a fully grown dragon to try and approach the Star peaks by flight.
Surrounded by the dangerous region known commonly as the Dark Forest, access to the twin peaks are made even more difficult due to the dangerous creatures, plants and phenomona that exist there.
History
The curious nature of the surrounding terrain and the sudden abruptness of the twin peaks, seemingly out of place in the middle of the Dark Forest, has caused many to speculate that the Star Mounts are not naturally formed. Even the elves, whose record date back to millennia before that of other races, have no known date, or cause, of the mountains creation. What is known however, is that the Star Mounts were, at one point, an active volcano. While it has not erupted in centuries, because of the difficulty of gaining access to the peaks, it is unknown if the volcano is dormant or extinct.
The earliest recorded names for these mountains have been attributed to the elves who resided in the region, before the forest became corrupted; calling them the Stars at the Heart of Creation, believing that all life on Azure originated from the continent of Iyos. Over the millennia, through the rough translation of their elven names, these mountains have been also called "The Far Star" (Y'tellarian) and "Traveller's Star" (Y'landrothiel), while the two together have been known as Y'landrothiel (N'landroshien). It is believed that these names hinted at some larger mystery that lay within the range.
Despite the dangers of travesring the Star Mounts, the elves that resided there, were known to have mined nearly-pure viens of Iron and Nickel from within the Star Mounts.
