Sacred Boar Constellation

The Sacred Boar Constellation, known as Gijak Gultur in orcish and Ko Sharn in hobgoblin, is a prominent constellation in the southern sky of Azimuth. It includes the southern star, a fixed point commonly used in navigation in the southern waters of the world.   The full constellation is comprised of several stars, which are commonly interpreted as a visual of a large boar by the cultures of Tarteria.

Description

The constellation is comprised of two close star formations surrounding and including the southern star. The first forms a semi circle basin, or bowl shape, with the southern star forming the central point. The second formation is several stars forming the shape of a large boar facing towards the basin.   As the constellation includes the southern star, the constellation gives the illusion of spinning around that point as the sky turns.

Cultural Meanings

The visual of the boar and the basin has led to several different interpretations to the cultures of Tarteria.   In common orcish belief, the boar is the Sacred Boar from Orcish Origin Myth that traveled to the sky to seek a den after birthing the orcish people. The constellation is called Gijak Gultur in orcish, meaning "Blood Boar".   In hobgoblin culture, the basin is interpreted as a shield or barrier, or as a representation of the Orog Range. This obstacle prevents the circling boar, a symbol of Keeleon, from crossing to hobgoblin lands. The constellation is called Ko Sharn in hobgoblin, meaning "Shield Star".

History

The Fifth Age: The Age of Beginnings
On 23 Adroth 5A 352, while on Zandandar Hill, Gertrude Oathenhammer received a reply from Bishop Rannyl Grimsunder saying, "Even if Chedae’s light is out of reach, it is still there, like a distant star…” At the mention of stars, Gertrude wept and looked to the sky where she saw the Sacred Boar Constellation. As she watched, the first rays of Parall, the sun, obscurred the stars.   In the early morning of 26 Adroth 5A 352, Chaka set up an easel while camping along the Orc Highway to paint a rendition of the Sacred Boar Constellation in the southern sky before the sun rose. He attempted to depict the hobgoblin meaning in the art.
