Moradin's Watch

Previously known as Gel Fluss before the Toldrunite coup.   This is the largest of the three border forts in the Toldrun See on the southern rivers that separate the See from the neighboring kingdom of Skerritt. It was previously a fairly large port town that was repurposed as a massive fortification, the main launching point for raids into Skerritt and the base of the See's naval armada. It is located on the coast where the Moradin's Arm river meets the Yaegar Ocean.   Like the other border settlements, the entirety of the population here is conscripted individuals and mercenaries. Some key roles here, such as master shipwrights, are staffed for a decade at a time instead of the usual 2-3 years. Outside of the Holy City, this is the most important city of the See.

Demographics

Like most of the See, this port city is mostly dwarvish, with a good portion of humans and halflings as well. Because it is coastal and has a large maritime industry, there are many other races present as people have come from across the world to work for good money here. Around 60% of the city's population is involved in the military or shipbuilding industries, with the remaining 40% employed in various service and support roles.

Government

The garrison is run by an Oberst (roughly equivalent to a colonel) that reports directly to the General in the Holy City. In terms of seniority, this Oberst is slightly above the others at the border forts. Assisting him is a large council of people who oversee various aspects of the city's administration, including the See's Grand Admiral who oversees all of the naval industries and operations.

Defences

This city is surrounded by a 20 foot wall of solid stone with steel reinforcements inside. The watchtowers and main gates are guarded by massive cannons of both gunpowder and arcane variety. The port is defended by several spaced cannonades, capable of taking out ships far offshore. This is the most secure port in the world, and no navy has ever come close to taking it. The various raids by the kingdom of Skerritt have never even attempted to take this fort, its massive fortifications and defenses preempting any attack. There is also a large prison complex in this city where heretics and enemy soldiers are housed while awaiting transport to the Holy City.

Infrastructure

This is by far the most advanced city in the entire See, with paved and well-maintained roads throughout the city and a vast, sophisticated port complex. A series of wells provides water to most of the city, but this is supplemented by a desalination facility that processes some seawater for potable use. The shipbuilding facilities and drydocks are among the largest and most sophisticated in the world. All in all, this is a very impressive city that convinces most of the visiting mercenaries to stay, despite the worse conditions elsewhere in the See.

Guilds and Factions

More than other parts of the See, this city has some semblance of factions and guilds, though they are all controlled by the facets of the church. Unlike in the Holy City, where the guild leaders are church functionaries with little knowledge of their respective industries, the leaders here in Moradin's Watch are experts in their various fields and know what it takes to do the jobs the represent.

History

The port town that was here before the fort had stood for several centuries before it was converted into this large fortified military town. It was not particularly large or well known, but it provided a lot of fish and other maritime products to the kingdom then known as Forgsberg.

Once the Toldrunites took over, they realized the need for border settlements, both to protect the See and to launch their raids into Skerritt. Just a few years after the founding of the See, they converted several smaller border settlements into fortified towns. Massive workforces were brought in to construct the large walls and central buildings of the settlements, which then led to them building various houses and shops for the rest of the towns. This garrison was one such settlement that was converted and heavily fortified.

There have not been many notable events in this city's history since its refounding. It has been the launching point for many raids, both naval and overland. And it continues to be the base for the See's entire navy, which patrols to and around the Isle of Basilisks searching for ships carrying heretics to other parts of the world. The High Inquisitor is also stationed in this city and carries out his raids and searches from the Inquisition center here.

Architecture

The vast majority of the buildings are made of stone, with a mix of slate and thatched roofs. The central temples and government buildings are hearty and made of dense stone meant to resist the ocean storms and salty air. Most are simple and functional, with very little grandeur or decoration - except the main temple of Toldrun and various other central buildings.
