Brodil Tove (broh-deel toh-vay)

Jarl Brodil Tove Ormrsdottir

Tove is the current jarl of the town of Brodilskiir in the Demesne of Ice. She is relatively young and has been on the throne only a few years. She is also currently the only female jarl in the Demesne and the youngest, so she has faced an uphill battle to earn respect from the other Frost Giants.   Tove never expected to be in a position of leadership, but she has risen to the challenge well. Originally, Tove's older brothers were in line for the throne, but they each died very early during battles or hunts. As Tove's father grew old and weary from the sadness of losing his two eldest children, he needed to name an heir. Tove was the only remaining member of the Brodil clan, and her father did not want their dynasty to die with him, so he officially declared Tove his heir.

Personal history

Tove was the third - and ended up being the last - child of the jarl Ormr and his late wife, who died when Tove was just five years old. Her two older brothers were supportive of her and helped raise Tove while their father was busy with his ruling duties. As a result, Tove learned more of the masculine traditions of the Frost Giants, including hunting, drinking, and wrestling. Her various maids and nannies also taught her the more traditional arts of embroidery, cooking, etc. In addition to these slightly informal lessons, Tove also received a formal education, as do most Frost Giant noble children.   Tove was raised most of her life with the intention she would be married off to another powerful noble - maybe even another jarl's child. She quietly resented this expectation that was placed on her, but her sense of familial duty and the cultural honor placed on housewives eventually convinced her to accept her fate.   When Tove was around 35, her two brothers died in quick succession of one another. Her oldest brother, Sten, was off with a war party attacking and plundering the Giant holds in the Forbidden Forest, when his whole party was ambushed and killed. This warmongering was a traditional rite of passage for the young Giant men who were supposed to become jarls, but that did little to assuage the jarl's guilt at sending his son to his death. Shortly after that, Ormr named his second son, Olin, his official successor.   Half a year after Sten died, Olin was out hunting wild boar when he was gored. His hunting party managed to slay the giant boar and carried Olin back home. He was tended by the healers of the town and even a passing Cleric was called in to aid Olin. But after two weeks fighting infection and trying to overcome his injuries, Olin passed away.   Ormr was deeply saddened at losing his two sons, especially after his wife had died decades earlier. This left just himself and his daughter Tove the last remaining members of the Brodil clan. He faced a grim future of the Brodil clan losing their throne in Brodilskiir, but out of necessity he officially declared Tove his successor once the grieving period for Olin had passed. Tove's life changed immediately, as Ormr hired a tutor to further her education in math, diplomacy, etc. She also began shadowing her father on his official duties, trying to learn what she could.   Tragedy struck the family yet again about five years later, though this time it was easier to see coming. After the deaths of Sten and Olin, Ormr had fallen into deep depression, and his health slowly declined over the next few years. Everyone expected he would pass relatively soon thereafter, and it came to be that he passed away in 1479 2A, at the relatively young age of 324. Tove was coronated after the grieving period, and she took her place on the town's throne.   Tove's first challenge was earning the respect of the other jarls so they wouldn't just walk all over her in the Thing. When they initially ignored or belittled her, she challenged then to various contests involving wrestling, drinking, and other crafts she had learned from her brothers all those years prior. When she not only held her own but was able to beat the other jarls at these contests, they had no choice but to give her the respect she had earned. Since that time, Tove has been a valuable member of the Thing and is just as respected and powerful as the other jarls.
