Faun

Fauns are a Fae-altered species that closely associates with their "creators". Originally satyrs who were kidnapped and modified for the perverse entertainment of their captors, fauns developed illusory magic and embraced the chaotic and hedonistic culture of the Courts.   As with all species who can credit their creation to the Fae, fauns are Sourceless.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Similar to their satyr cousins, fauns are humanoid bipeds with horns and animalistic legs. Fauns have a slimmer build than their goat-like relatives, instead having hind-quarters resembling a small deer. Fauns of any sex will display branching antlers atop their heads. This species universally has white spots on their furry legs, but their coat color can vary from ghostly grey to deep brown. Their hair color has an even wider range, reaching a variety of bright pigments.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Within each tribe, fauns follow an age-based heirarchy when making decisions. This allows experienced elders to chart the path of the group while considering their enviornment and the movement of other clans. In dealings between groups, charm and social wit are valued.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The faun population is divided into a handful of nomadic villages that wander the Wild Frontier. Groups maintain a distance from each other whenever possible. This is for the sake of lessening the strain placed on local resources rather than conflict.

Civilization and Culture

History

The origin of fauns rests with satyrs. Their creation was the result of experiments carried out by a coalition of Fae courts across several species of subjects. The goal of these experiments was to identify and isolate Source. Instead of discovering immortality, the Fae researchers were only able to remove the naturally occuring Source of their subjects. While other races resent these brutal experiments that shaped future generations, the cruelty of their origin is lost to fauns. Instead of simmering in bitterness and plots of revenge, becoming Sourceless was integrated into their lives and culture. When local ecosystems were unable to support the Sourcing of their growing groups the fauns became nomadic, lessening the severity of their impact on any one area. When elders and children were unable to Source themselves, they developed group Sourcing rituals. When other, fearful, and dangerous races began to expand into the Wild Frontier, fauns used their illusory abilities to blend in.   Fauns generally try to avoid the new colonies being developed along the Wild Frontier, prefering to more closely associate with the Fae courts. "Try" is a key word, however, as they are a curious and capricious people who find it difficult to resist investigating the encroaching civilization.
