Despite the deceptive name of the language, Helios Hieroglyphics are far less elaborate than traditionally. In addition, the language it not always written, but is also a sign language. Helios are human sub-species who are completely mute and thus require an entirely unique manner of communication. While many people people think that Helios can communicate telepathically, this is not true. This misconception is borne from the delicacy of Heiros (Helios Hieroglyphics), which can often go without being discerned to the untrained eye.

Writing System

The written heiros is a series of precise lines and shapes, used to parallel the correlated gestures. Concepts are usually curved in nature, while nouns and verbs consist of straight lines. There is no standardized method of depicting emotion, but there is a series of mixed curved and straight lines that are gaining momentum to fulfill this purpose.

Vocabulary

Heirios is an extremely complex language that mainly focuses of verbs and nouns. There is an extremely limited emotional vernacular and in many cases an extended emotional vocabulary is generate withing a relationship or family and propagated accordingly. In the sign language component of the language, different concepts are portrayed by different parts of the body:
  • Verbs are indicated using the hands, fingers and arms.
  • Abstract concepts are indicated by facial movement, or hand indications in the head area.
  • Nouns are indicated by finger gestures only and are usually correlated wit the gesture that indicates the associated action. (For example, sleep and bed are the same gesture)
  • Emotions are indicated in the torso area.
Common Female Names
Female Names are usually communicated using emotional gestures or nouns. This is highly indicative of their place in Helios society. Due to the nature of their names, they are poorly, if ever, portrayed in literature and viewed as emotional creatures of poor logic and little purpose above childbearing and home care. People who are not fluent in Heiros are given to believe that women do not have names at all and refer to them by the derogatory three fingered gesture meant to indicate Helios.
Common Male Names
Men's names vary from the simple verb/noun compounds to complex higher concepts gestures. Again, this is derivative of their role in the community where they are seen as scholars, leaders and inventors. All Helios men are given a common name based on the letters most similar o their name hieroglyphics. They wear this name embroidered on the left side of the chest on all their clothing.
