Gredelian Runestones

*insert chart here*

Use

They are used to keep people from traveling into dangerous areas but can also serve as a navigational tool. Many maps of Njirralde have the most easily spotted runestones labeled on the map, and a map with an up to date coverage of all the runestones in Njirralde can easily be obtained. The map also shows the directional marker on the runestone, allowing a traveler to easily determine where he is and orient himself accordingly.

Composition

Traditional Gredelian Runestones were made with any vertical rock and became faded over time. New runestones are made with an upright, smooth, strong, light grey stone that is easily discernible from its surroundings. The innermost ring of stones will often have a thick rope connecting them to ensure that no one will accidentally enter the area because they walked between two stones. In cases where the beast is known, or likely to remove those ropes, small stones are placed on the ground on the perimeter of the area between the runestones.

Upkeep

With the runestones having been along for so long, and beasts constantly changing their territory, it is easy for the runestones to become outdated. Hunters and travelers will report any abanded or new nests that they discover to the National Gredelian Upkeep, which will then take appropriate measures.   The National Gredelian Upkeep is an organization that maintains, removes, and adds new Gredelian Runestones to areas when needed, and also keeps official maps up to date. When they receive a report of a new or abandoned nest, they send out agents to scout the area and determine whether or not any changes need to be made. While they do have their own patrols, they mostly rely on the words of others. Because the Gredelian Runestones are a major means of navigation in Njirralde, there is always a steady stream of reports.

Laws and Regulations

It is illegal to make any changes to the runes on the runestones unless you have received a proper order from the National Gredelian Upkeep. If you are caught making changes you will be charged with a hefty fine and held in a prison for 2 months. Additional charges may be added depending on the number of runestones you made changes to.   Similarly, selling maps with blatantly incorrect information or maps that are over ten amendments incorrect will result in a fine. The price of the fine varies depending on the sold map's degree of error.
Gredelian Runestones have been used since ancient times in Njirralde to keep track of the lairs and nests of strong magical beasts. Each rune displays the assumed danger level if one were to trespass and the direction and distance of the area from the runestone.
