High Elf
The main populations of Avernay are humans and elves at about 40/60, both claiming they were the original inhabitants of the land. Each has cities and homesteads of their own. Humans tend to farm while elves are artisans and scholars. There are various clans of both types that have strong footholds across the country, a caste system firmly in place for both.
Aleynath is the capital of the elven people and their royal city. The city is beautiful, with golden adornments on almost every building, and lots of fresh open spaces. The elves value water very highly, even those who are not spiritual. The buildings here are tall, so while the city itself is smaller, it soars into the sky, towering over Lake Vernay and all its inhabitants. The tallest towers are the academies for magick and scholars, whom the elves value most highly.
The current ruler is Queen Asaleth V’ehanyn (ah-sah-leth, veh-ah-nin), who has been a less than benevolent monarch to the humans, having quelled numerous attempts at uprisings. Many human nobles have been assassinated in recent months as well and the rumor is it is her doing.

Geographic Origin and Distribution
The elves of cities and towns are different from those who keep to the forests. Those in the forests are more like dryads, bound to the earth and nature, which they worship. Hidden in the trees are magnificent temples of winding and bending wood. These elves tend to be taller and more effervescent, with large eyes better to see in the dark. The elves that live in such places are known as Children of the Leaf or Le’ellyn (lay-ell-in).
