Razran

Razran is a coastal city in Umela.

Demographics

A large percentage of the population of Razran makes their money through shipping and fishing. Due to being a coastal city, there is also a large number of Merefolk living in Razran.

Government

The city of Razran is overseen by a governor elected by those who own property in the area. While this creates an imbalance between the wealthy few and the less wealthy minority, it has not caused drastic issues as of yet for the city.

Defences

Being a coastal city gives Razran some natural defenses, which have been augmented with watch towers at various points around the fringes of the city. A city guard also patrols the streets to keep the peace. There is also a network of tunnels beneath the city and at its outskirts that date back to the times before the creation of Core Anchors that are used as shelters and to store weapons. Though many of these tunnels are no longer well-kept, a number are maintained in the event that they are needed.

Industry & Trade

Razran's main industry is shipping, with fishing being the second largest industry. Most residents make their living working on the ships or the docks, or supporting those who do. Additionally, many merchants do well importing goods through Razran and shipping them upriver into Umela.

Guilds and Factions

While the Skywatcher Institute and Adventuring Guild have outposts in Razran, as is common in nearly every city in Avarha, Razran is also home to a Dockworkers' Guild and a Fishermen's Guild. It is often noted that there is no Thieves' Guild, as Razran's authorities are prompt about casting thieves out of the city.

History

Razran's location at a junction between sea and river is what drew the first residents to settle in the area. Natural caves along the shoreline provided shelter during Realm Conjunctions, which early residents expanded to create networks of storage spaces and fairly comfortable accommodations during the Conjunctions. Eventually, at a time not specified in the records, the Uma family assumed control of the area and installed a family member as an early governor. That family line has long since ended, but the city has continued to thrive as a part of Umela ever since.

Tourism

There is little tourism directly to Razran. Most who visit the city do so only briefly, typically as a stop on a longer journey, either as part of a ship's crew or those looking to move deeper into Umela by way of the Akrus River.
