Thor's arrival was in direct correlation to the realization that Avalon Valley would need to become self-sufficient and seek out their own food to survive.  While many individuals knew the concept of farming and gardening, Thor stepped in to help teach and guide the mortals.  He also gave their crops and animals a boost to help with the new way of life.
