Lords of Waterdeep

Overview

The Lords of Waterdeep are the mysterious and predominantly anonymous ruling council of Waterdeep, having governed the city from the 11th century onwards. They oversee the regional economy, maintain security, perform diplomacy, hold legal jurisdiction over the city and exert their will over the surrounding lands for approximately 100 mi (160 km) beyond the city walls. They are the main governmental body for all of the Kingdom of Rivenspire

The Open Lord

The Open Lord of Waterdeep (also called the "Unmasked Lord") is the sole member of the Lords of Waterdeep whose identity is publicly known. The Open Lord holds a number of additional titles including Warden of Waterdeep, Overmaster of the Guilds, and Commander of the Watch. The Open Lord is also the city's chief diplomat. There is only one Open Lord at any time. There have been 7 Open Lords so far: Ahghairon the Mage, Baeron Silmaeril, Lhestyn the Masked Lady, Piergeiron the Paladinson, Caladorn Cassalanter, Dagult Neverember, and Lady Laeral Silverhand

The Masked Lords

While The Open Lord sits openly to the public eye, a council of other lords of nearly equal power rule alongside The Open Lord. The identity of the other lords, The Masked Lords, is hidden even from each other, thus preventing any of them from being approached and influenced by bribe or threat.
