Vengili

The Vengili are one of the three native races of the continent of Queorne.

Etymology

The word "Vengili"

History

The Vengili tribes have settled in eastern Queorne for almost all of their history. There are some claims that they were originally from an island off the eastern coast, but these claims are most likely false. Since they have owned the land, they have had their tribes, which arose from small communities coming together to survive in various conditions.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Vengili do not bear last/family names, as everyone in a tribe is considered a uniform family.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Most Vengili believe that other races and ethnicities are a threat to their way of life, and as such, they believe that integrating with foreign cultures is seen as treason.

Common Customs, traditions and rituals

Tattoos are extremely common among the Vengili, and many rituals and customs are centered around them.   Vengili commonly have tattoos on their face or back that reflect their lineage or duties in the tribe.

Funerary and Memorial customs

Full article: Vengili Funeral   When a Vengili dies, a funeral pyre is made. Then, a significant figure of their life writes a personal letter, immediately seals it up, and places it in the pyre. Then, a tattoo is painted onto the dead Vengili's torso that designates who they were in the tribe and their personality traits. Finally, the shaman sprinkles a pleasant-smelling incense on the body, and finish the ceremony by igniting the pyre.

Common Myths and Legends

The Vengili primarily worship a singular unnamed god of war who appears as a boar. One famous legend claims that his immortality was stolen from him by a sorcerer, hence the Vengili's complete hatred towards "magic".   Vengili shamans and warriors believe to draw power from the Tap of the Warrior, a mystical force that is believed to be inside all vertebrates. The source of this power is said to come from a creature's spine and spinal fluids, hence why invertebrates like insects, crabs, worms, and the like are not held in high regard in comparison to animals like horses, boars, bears, wild cats, and snakes.   There is a common belief in a missing art called Kef-Kal, which translates to "flesh-shaping". Users of this mystic power, called Kef-Kalni, can shape-shift into various creatures. Signs of a Kef-Kalni include whispering while asleep, a shifting eye color, and non-callused feet.   The afterlife is said to be another realm where an infinite wild plane exists, free to be taken and used. Due to this, death, while still tragic, is believed to be the beginning of a new life. In this realm, spirits are said to be more evident and visible, and those that are attuned to their Tap can "whisper" to those that carry on their Tap in the realm of the living.
