Kingdom of New Valara
New Valara is the ancient kingdom of the high elves and the last remaining haven for the fair folk in Eridas. In ages past its borders stretched across the Summer Coast all the way to the Gulf of Valeros. The centuries have not been kind to the elves however, and New Valara is now reduced to a small cluster of islands surrounding the capital city of Anerion. Nevertheless, New Valara remains a flourishing hub of learning and culture, and one of the world's great centers of arcane knowledge.
The elves originally hail from the island paradise of Old Valara off the western coast of Eridas. When the dark powers invaded the world of mortals during the Age of Crisis, Old Valara was overrun by the forces of the Archenemy and reduced to a desolate wasteland. The few surviving elves fled to the islands of the Summer Coast where they established a new kingdom for themselves, centered on the great white city of Anerion.
During the Age of Heroes, New Valara flourished and grew strong, expanding its influence over much of Southern Eridas. With the conquests of Leo the Lionheart and the birth of the Kingdom of Galaria however, its power began to decline. The crushing defeats suffered by the elves during the Valerosi invasions of the 12th century marked the end of New Valra’s tenure as a great power. Today the kingdom is a pale shadow of its former self. It clings stubbornly to the last shred of its territory, providing a last safe sanctuary for a dying race.
New Valara’s system of government is closely tied to the ancient arcane traditions of the high elves. An immensely powerful mage-king, known as a valar, rules the kingdom as an absolute monarch whose word is law. Succession to the throne is elective rather than hereditary, but the method of election is somewhat unusual. Upon the valar’s death, the archmages call forth the spirits of the deceased Valar of ages past. A ghostly council of kings is convened to choose the next leader of elvenkind.
