Kingdom of Galaria

The Kingdom of Galaria is the oldest and largest of the great empires of men. It lies in the central Heartlands along the banks of the mighty Galar River. The regular and predictable flooding of the great river has made Galaria’s fields rich and fertile, and the kingdom has been the agrarian breadbasket of the continent for thousands of years.   The Kingdom of Galaria is as ancient as it is wealthy and powerful. It was founded over 1500 years ago during the Age of Heroes by the legendary conqueror Leo the Lionheart, who forged the independent city states and petty kingdoms of the Galar Basin into an empire and built the magnificent city of Lionhold to be his capital. The Lionheart’s descendants still sit upon the Galarian throne, just as their ancestors have for 50 generations.   During the Age of Conquest, successive kings of Galaria expanded their empire even further, eventually establishing at least nominal rule over most of Eridas. Over the past few centuries, Galarian dominance has slowly crumbled away. Wracked by invasion from without and rebellion and civil war from within, the kingdom has entered a long slow period of decline. Nevertheless, Galaria remains one of the great powers, and the name of “Lionheart” still commands fear and respect from the Old World to the New.   Galaria’s government is aristocratic and strictly hierarchical. The kingdom is run by an ancient caste of hereditary, chivalric nobility, many of whom can trace their family lineages back thousands of years to the Age of Heroes. At the top of this hierarchy sit the Kings of the House of Lionheart, who rule with the assistance of a large network of vassals and feudal magnates spread throughout the empire.   The Galarian peasant folk are a peaceful, agrarian people, making their living from the rich, fertile soil of their homeland. They have a fondness for art, music, and storytelling, and the country is home to rich folklore and oral history traditions. The Galarian upper classes share this passion for the arts, particularly epic poetry and chivalric romances. However, the Galarian nobles are also notorious for their opulence, drunkenness, and sexual debauchery. Their enemies often consider them decadent and effete, deriding them for having forgotten their illustrious warrior past. Be that as it may, Galarian cuisine, fashions, and culture remain popular among the upper classes all over Eridas.
