Background Options

The following are suggestions and inspiration. They are not by any means the only backgrounds available to player characters.   Acolyte: The “official” priesthoods of the Eight are typically structured and hierarchical, but many of the divines have mendicant clerics and lay preachers in their service as well. Consider your character's position within the religious hierarchy if any, and what attracts them about the particular member or members of the pantheon they serve.   Criminal: The criminal underbelly of the known world is dominated by intricate networks of organized crime. Underground revolutionary groups like the Seekers of the Way also frequently run in criminal circles. Consider whether your character belongs to an organized group or works as a freelancer, and what circumstances might have driven them to a life of crime.   Noble: Most humanoid societies have some kind or hereditary aristocracy, whether formalized or unofficial. The powerful noble houses who rule the world’s great empires jockey for power in an endless game of high stakes power politics. Many aristocratic dynasties trace their lineages to the legendary adventurers of the Age of Heroes or other illustrious ancestors. Consider what sort of aristocratic family your character belongs to and what has caused (or compelled) them to trade their life of luxury for a life of adventure.   Sage: The 16th century GR is a golden age for science and intellectual pursuits. The discovery of the New World and advancements in technology both mundane and magical have greatly expanded man’s understanding of the universe. Consider what field your character studies, and how they feel about the new ideas and advancements being made within it. You might also consider whether they are part of an organization like the Archivist Order or the Royal Navigators Guild, or operate independently.   Sailor: Sea travel is the lifeblood of civilization in the known world. Advances in navigation and sailing technology are what made the Age of Discovery possible to begin with. Whether you’re an explorer, a corsair, or a naval officer, there has never been a better time to be a sailor. Consider what kind of ship your character served on, what position they held in the crew, and where they might have journeyed during that service.   Soldier: In the 16th century GR, the age of knighthood is drawing to a close. The warrior noble is slowly giving way to the professional soldier. War remains an eternal constant however. Consider your character’s position within the military hierarchy, their branch of service or specialization, which flag they fought under, and where and with whom they might have served.
