Personal history

Lyra does not know of her birth parents. What is known is that she was born in August of 1996 in Norvisk and was swiftly brought to the Aurora Federation (AF) not long after. A family friend of her birth parents, Raissa Malynivka, brought Lyra to her colleague, which would become her adopting mother, Karis Vitalis. Brought bundled up in a blanket in a basket, Raissa pleaded with Karis and her engaged partner to take Lyra in, even if temporarily. Feeling for her friend, Karis agreed to take Lyra in for now until Raissa could reunite her with her parents, or find the young aussie a new home. Thus, Karis and her fiancée, Irina Samarin, with no experience caring for a newborn, took on raising Lyra -- a little girl who all they knew about was her name.

After a few months, the two got quite attached to Lyra quickly. Despite being first time parents with a baby dropped on them suddenly, things had been going smoothly -- she was very well tempered, easy to care for, and they thought she was absolutely adorable. Raissa returned later to convene with the couple with news about Lyra. She stated that Norvisk was currently in disarray and it was not certain if or when Lyra could be reunited with her biological parents. Raissa then offered to find Lyra a more permanent home, but then Karis and Irina intervened, lauding about how much they loved her. Relieved, Raissa was happy Lyra had a home. But she did have to let them know of a caveat -- that if Lyra's parents ever reemerged, they would have the right to take her back. The two accepted these terms, despite the idea of her being potentially ripped away from them heartbreaking.

A year later, Raissa would come back, essentially saying that Lyra would become there's (without any additional info.) She then scheduled the couple with the AF Immigration and Adoption Office to formalize the adoption of little Lyra. Thus, on March 12, 1998, Karis and Irina were her official legal parents.

Raissa warned them, however, that she could never return to Norvisk for her safety. This perplexed Karis and Irina, but Raissa would not elaborate, despite being in the same line of work as Karis.

Early Life (1996 - 2014)

Lyra was raised in the town of Helenes in the Kavrish province of the Aurora Federation, bordering the country of Norvisk. It was a modern, medium-sized place meshed with both natural beauty as well as technically advanced architecture. Her first adoptive mother, Karis, is a diplomat for the AF and a keyboardist. Her second adoptive mother, Irina, is a herbalist, painter, and public works coordinator for Kavrish. Being a diplomat, Karis would have to leave often for her job, but she managed to schedule her travel and work so she could be home most nights. Thus, Irina took care of Lyra most of the day time.

Irina was the one who introduced Lyra to drawing and then, subsequently, painting. Starting with paper canvas, then to digital, she taught the little shepherd the principles of art, technique, and encouraged her to experiment. She took to it quite well, especially for a left-handed painter. At home she and Irina would set up props to paint, as well as use reference photos to take inspiration from. Irina commented that she thought that by age 8, Lyra had already achieved an adult level of skill. Furthermore, Irina was an immigrant from Norvisk and decided to teach her Koravian -- the main language in Norvisk. She had already learned Akuvian and Reichan (the two most common languages of the Federation), but Irina figured one day that she'd wish to return to her homeland. Thus knowing the language, as well as some of the history and culture, would be beneficial for her personally.

Despite Irina working a lot from home, there were still times that neither Irina nor Karis could be present. Thus, Irina hired her friend Riley Len to watch Lyra a few times each week, as well as tutor her. Riley was a former member of the Norvisk Jade Division (NJD), but left the service and subsequently Norvisk too as she became disillusioned with the path and practices of the government. She now worked part time as both a consultant for the AF Federal Banking System (AFFBS) and as a tutor. Lyra looked up to her fondly, seeing her as the cool and chill 'aunt', and intrigued her cybernetic eyes. Riley would help her with school work, assist Irina in teaching her Koravian and the Norvisk history, play video games with her, and pose for her artwork. She would go on to be a friend she could go to for many years to come.

Lyra and her parents would have a scare in 2004, however. In October, while working her job as a diplomat in Norvisk, Karis was put under house arrest there along with her colleagues. The Norvisk Corporate Security Conglomerate (NCSC), a security company funded by Norvisk's most elite corporations, led an attempted coup d'état against the Norvinsk Government. During that time, the NCSC began arresting members of state, as well as foreign emissaries -- like members of the Aurora Federation embassy including Karis. She was confined to her living quarters near her embassy and not allowed to speak to anyone except her career contact for weeks. Lyra and Irina watched the situation for weeks anxiously on the TV, fearing that Karis may have been harmed. After a couple weeks, Karis was permitted by her captors to communicate with her family, in which her spouse and Lyra learned that she was safe and of her predicament. Almost two months after the coup started, the Norvisk government and the NCSC came to an agreement, ending the fighting, and allowing officials like Karis to walk free.

Having been returned safely home, Karis decided not to return back to Norvisk for her job. Instead she chose a position within her job that allowed her to complete her tasks remotely, and less frequently. This allowed her to stay at home more with Lyra, something they both really appreciated. Karis was very confident and outgoing, which helped bring Lyra out of her shell more -- as Lyra was generally more shy and quiet outside her family and few friends. Karis would make sure to take Lyra on some of her work and personal trips across the Federation, letting her get a taste of life outside of Kavrisk. Karis was also a pilot, and would frequently take Lyra and Irina up in the sky. Later in life, Lyra would obtain her own pilot's license.

[Student of the Arts]
As Lyra was turning 9, following Irina's advice, Karis helped Lyra apply and be accepted into an applied arts and crafts school -- a specialized primary education they thought would be good for her, given her skillset. While these schools were pretty accepting of students of most skill levels, Lyra's talents helped her start taking advanced classes immediately. While she never was a bad student, switching to this school seemed to really bring out the best in her. Having something geared towards her likes, she also enjoyed attending much more than her ordinary primary school.

Turning 13, however, it would become apparent to Lyra's parents that she was experiencing some mental ailment. The signs were small at first, like random bouts irritability or anxiety. Then it escalated to a lack of sleep, occassional outbursts, and the suffering of her school performance. It then became frightening when it became apparent Lyra was experiencing auditory hallucinations that were making her paranoid and further withdrawn. To her parents, her personaltiy had seemed to completely change. And now with the hallucinations, it was decided that she should see a top level doctor. Several tests were run, with the most confident diagnosis in the end being one thing: childhood schizophrenia. Lyra broke down crying in front of her parents and the doctor. She felt like her life would never be back on the rails again.

Despite the serious ailment, her doctor was able to find her an effective treatment plan that was able to turn her life completely around, almost entirely eliminating her symptoms (apart from the occassional mood changes). The Vulskaya Emergent Applied Medicines (VEAM) medical corporation specialized in psychiatric medications and treatments for serious mental disorders, schizophrenia included. Lyra and her parents travelled to the VEAM headquarters for lab testing and diagnosis to design a treatment plan. For the next year, Lyra would keep in close contact with her VEAM psychiatrist, narrowing down her exact treatment and monitoring her progress. While it wasn't smooth sailing at first, as the months passed her parents noticed how much she was returning back to her normal, bubbly self.

Due to the first few months being rough to adjust, Lyra spent the first half of 2010 mostly at home, completing her classes online and being cared for by her parents and Riley. Lyra had begun picking up singing, and found out Riley also sang. Having been a vocalist in her free time back in Norvisk, she taught Lyra the basics of pitch and slowly introduced her to basic songs. She took to it well, and Karis helped out by using her keyboarding skills to help her with pitch and timing. As she improved, Lyra, Riley and Karis would write songs together, giving her relaxing musical out while she went under her treatment.

[Relations]
As she studied in school, Lyra struggled to find a good niche with friends. She had her acquaintences in her major, but wasn't as successful finding any long-term connections. She went from friend to friend until in 2010, as she was recovering, she finally met someone. A family moved by with a girl near her age named Lynn. Her family had moved from a big city in another province to the more spacious suburbs of Helenes, Kavrish for a change in pace. Lynn was a bluish canine-reindeer-like mix who was a year younger than Lyra, and was outgoing and quirky. Karis and Irina, seeing the opportunity, made friends with their new neighbors and introduced their two kids to eachother.

Lynn's natural confidence and bratty, adventurous attitude was a great boost to Lyra's self esteem. She was always very considerate of Lyra, but also tried to push her out of her comfort zone. Lynn got her to go out more, sing at public events, and post her works online more. Lynn herself was not an artist, but she did know how to sing and would help Lyra compose and accompany her. While they did not attend the same primary school, Lyra would visit her almost everyday. As her confidence grew, Lyra got more into expressing herself -- styling her hair how she wanted, dyeing parts of her fur, and changing her attire.

[Turning Point]
With graduation nearing, Lyra looked into finding some opporunities in her field in preparation. She already had a pretty good portfolio of her own work, but had yet to have any work experience for it.

Early Adulthood (2014 - 2020)

Having both graduated from art school and having real work on her portfolio, Lyra began to pursue part-time work with her certificate and skills. Most projects were from small, one time clients who just needed a few pieces done. The money was decent, but the clientel for local projects was limited in Helenes. Thus, she'd either have to travel further, or compete with others for remote projects (which she did both). It was a relatively calm and steady workflow out of school though. Although Lyra longed for something bigger.

Outside of her normal workflow, she would work with Irina with her job. Irina's job basically detailed "prettying up" the town, usually by adding elements of nature entwined with neo-cyber architecture. It was part of a public works initiative to liven up Kavrish and the towns and cities within it. Lyra enjoyed the work, it being a nice change of her normal schedule. She was able to combine her drawing skills with Irina's ideas to layout design plans. While it's something Lyra couldn't see herself doing for years, for the moment it was nice. Lyra's unique touches to some of the designs across the town of Helenes also garnished her some local attention, and some higher up clients too. She'd find herself in this workflow for the next few years.

Lynn graduated a year after Lyra and proceeded to attend a university. She attended a school still local to the Kavrish province, which allowed her and Lyra to still spend in person time together. They would usually get to visit each other every or every other weekend, either going out into the city or doing jam sessions and playing videogames at Lynn's place. Despite both being adults, they still maintained a close knit friendship.

[Gaining Momentum]
As time rolled into 2017, Lyra had garnished a decent number of clients and work, and with it a good resume. Having a good amount of money saved up, with more flowing in, and her skillset, she decided to try and create her own brand. Taking her skills of art, animation, and singing (and a bit of music), she wanted to create her own online following and profit from her own creations. She reopened her art commissions online (which she hadn't done since school) to a more general audience to get a wider web of recognition. She also began releasing her own works online for public viewing and allowing the subscriptions of patrons. Furthermore, she got back into writing music and publishing her songs as well. For music, Lyra ellicited the help of Dire -- a keyboardist that she had met as a client. The two worked remotely together to release collaborations, with her including animated music videos as well. As the months went by, Lyra saw her following steadily grow. And through her followers and clients, she was able to make many more friends.

During 2018, Lyra began releasing a short animated series titled: "Translucent Curtains." Drawing from her Norviskan heritage, she created a narrative following two characters: one in modern day Norvisk, and one a hundred years ago. In a fictional cyberpunk-esque adaptation, the two characters communicate with one another via random "portals", peering into each others lives and wondering where things went wrong. And together they try to see if they can stop the corporatized, authoritarian government that Norvisk becomes (not too dissimilar to the real Norvisk). Lyra, Lynn, Dire and a new friend named Izzy did all of the voice acting and music while Lyra did the drawing and animation. Despite the complicated subject matter, the pilot episode was very well received. She'd continue to work on this series for a while as one of her many ongoing projects.

Also the same year, Lyra had saved up enough money to move to her own place. She could have moved sooner, but she decided to wait until she felt like her career was stable and that she could move comfortably away. She found a modest sized house in the city of Laryssa, still within Kavrish. While she was excited to have her own place, it was the first time Lyra had lived on her own. She was anxious how she would do, especially if she had any relapses or bouts with her condition. Lynn was reassuring that she'd be fine, and offered to crash over there as often as she could. This helped a lot and

Another goal she had been secretly working on was planning an itinerary for a trip to Norvisk herself. Despite Riley and her parents had warned her it wasn't safe to go, and knowing the political climate in Norvisk, she felt she still needed to go. She wanted to see all the beautiful sights and historic places that Irina mentioned, as well as to find answers about herself. She spert the time saving up and kept these plans to herself and Lynn. Lynn was worried about her going, but didn't see it right to stop her.

(becomes more confident)

Moving Away (2021 - 2024)

In the early part of 2021, Lyra met someone who would go on to be an important person in her life. A new client messaged her, named Mitsu Akiyama, about commissioning some art pieces for a couple of his own creative projects. While she occassionally had others paying for work to be done for their stories, etc., the scale of what he had planned was much more aligned to her own projects. She was intrigued, and the two continued to collaborate for the following months. As they worked together, they started talking more regular even outside of the normal business talk. Lyra found out they had a lot of similar interests, like writing and music. She also enjoyed his soft demeanor and mannerisms, and he seemed to like her's the same. As they got more connected, they began sharing their works: Lyra introduced him to her Translucent Curtains project, which he hadn't read before but very much loved once he did. He also let her help him with drafting and editing, letting her collaborate and use her own talent to suggest ideas.

The weekly collaboration and banter became daily as the two became more and more fond of each other. Late night talks, playing games together, and indulging each other in their writings. She hadn't felt this way about someone in a long time. Eventually she hinted at a deeper interest in him, and he did the same. Lyra was a bit hesitant though: being a member of the ADC, she didn't know if he was like a gruff vet. She went to Lynn for advice. Lynn was ecstatic, reading her texts and Lyra blushed and finding her worries misplaced. She nudged Lyra to invite him to fly out and visit. Her heart pounded: she very much liked Mitsu, but it was a very forward step. Bracing herself, she mentioned him coming to visit on a video call one night. He blushed but was quite eager and politely accepted. A week later he flew to Kavrish to meet her.

They spent a week together -- going around Kavrish and seeing the sights, eating out, and enjoying each other's company. They also stayed inside -- drafting ideas together, watching shows, and laying next to one another. She even worked up the courage to sing in front of him, blushing at the end as he applauded her. And each night would conclude with the two in each other's embrace into slumber. They got to learn about their own lives and pasts. On a few occassions she even invited Lynn along, who lightheartedly teased the couple endlessly. It was a heavenly time for Lyra, and one of the best moments of her life: a week off to be more intimate with someone. (Lyra opens up about her illness)

Education

Lyra attended basic primary education until the age of 6, when she was accepted into the Helenes Art Academy -- a branch of the Kavrish Institute of Art and Design. There she was able to learn more about digital art, animation, design and modelling, and more. She also attended classes for singing and keyboard. Her education and connections allowed her to graduate with an Applied Arts Certificate and begin working freelance without proceeding to a university.

Employment

Lyra is a freelance artist by trade. She specializes in digital art, animation, and making her own music for her animated projects. She started her freelance career taking commissions as a teenager from mostly individual customers. As time went on, she started getting a variety of clients, including a good portion of businesses and brands. As she gained success, she was able to structure her career by primarily monetizing her own intellectual creations, while still being subsidized by her 3rd party clients. As an adult she also incorporated her singing as part of her brand, too.
