Solaris Republic
The Solaris Republic is the current government for the Islands in the southeastern sea of Aurelia. Composed primarily of humans, there is a notable population of half-elves and elves as well. The University also brings in a wide array of races, however they rarely leave the lands close to University City. Most people in Solaris live on the big islands of Scholara and Mirefen, or in the islands to the south in the Shattered Island chain. Very few live on the islands of Pinecrest or the Eclipse Atoll.
The inhabitants of Solaris lead predominantly simple lives, primarily engaged in fishing and agriculture. Mining activities are infrequent, leading to a scarcity of goblins and dwarfs within this region of Aurelia. Vast swathes of Solaris are enveloped in lush foliage, serving as habitats for a multitude of creatures and assorted hazards. Most individuals tend to stick to the coastal regions of the smaller islands, leaving the interiors to the indigenous people who still exist, separated from the 'cultured' world around them.
Long ago, Solaris was a disparate collection of rival factions and warring pirate-state islands. Endless conflict plagued the region and sea trading was virtually impossible, causing suffering and stagnation. Amidst this turmoil, a visionary leader emerged—a charismatic figure whose name is now long lost to history. This leader, through sheer charisma and unwavering determination, had brought together the disparate islands and warring pirate factions under a single banner of unity. Election systems were set up and put in place to allow the people to decide their own ruler, a process which still is in place to this day, hundreds of years later. Piracy has largely been eradicated over the years, although military boats not-infrequently practice search and seizure under the pretense of inspection or contraband.
Although originally setup as a Democracy, the islands today exist in a Democratic Dictatorship. Although the people technically can vote for their leadership, no election has taken place for several years and the last few elections have widely been considered a farse. The council of leadership itself has become just a figurehead and all governing power resides in the leader, Sir Percival Waggles.
